Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth of July.

Relax and enjoy friends, family and fun if you can. Whatever you do be thankful for the freedom our ancestors fought for.
America is a great nation and has been greatly blessed.

In generations gone by they read the Declaration of Independence on July 4 each year then celebrated with Lemonade and corn on the cob. Fireworks are mentioned in the Little House on the Prairie series,
though I doubt it approached the grand displays we have today.
Lemons had to come up from Florida , Texas and California and were not readily available so that must have been quite a treat.
Apple pies and cakes rounded out the celebration with steaming cups of hot coffee and cold glasses of foaming milk for the children.

It is my hope that Americans bring back the habit of reading the Declaration of Independence on the 4th each year. It does not take a lot of time and since it is a document that founded this great nation, and one that was paid for with a very heavy price , it is almost a disgrace not to read it. And so many have never read it.
Children and grandchildren should be made aware of what the day stands for else it becomes just another day off.
Like Memorial Day and Veterans Day, all the great holidays, we and our children should understand the great significance behind them and never let them fall by the wayside as just another day off from work and school. We should never take this knowledge for granted.
We need to teach these things to our children and their children and make it a tradition that does not die.

I wish you a happy and liberty filled day in celebration of the birthday of the United States of America.

  1. Fabulous post Annie! I agree that we should celebrate the 4th with more than fireworks and BBQ --a little appreciation of the history of the Revolution and reading both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are ways to enhance our love of country & the freedom so many gave their lives for.

    Happy 4th 0f July!

  2. Way to go Annie, I couldn't have said it better! Yes we better not forget, and we all need to teach our children and grandchildren this for sure. What a wonderful post, and now I'm so thirsty for some homemade lemonade, I will never take it for granted anymore.
Have a wonderful 4th ! That is such a beautiful picture.

  3. Hi Annie! So wonderful to see you posting again. Your posts are always so great. I agree 100% with you about the Declaration of Independence. I would bet that most kids don't know a thing about it, & that is so sad. I try to teach Elliot & Emily, I after reading your post, I am going to go online, find it, & print it out. I can begin to read a bit each day to them & try to explain to them.

Hope you have a lovely weekend - without humidity. :-) Have a safe 4th Annie. Hugs

  4. My 4 greats great grandfather fought in the War of 1812, and his father and father in law fought in the Revolution (my 5 greats great grandfathers). Also, the capitol of West Virginia is named after my 7 greats great grandfather. If you know that you're a descendant of a colonial family, you don't forget these things. Though, I'm sure there are many people who simply don't know, and whose families didn't keep track. I must admit to feeling insulted, although I do realize that your words were not directed at me specifically and that I shouldn't feel this way.

  5. You have a wonderful way of reminding us of valuable things - the laughter of children and their dear accomplishments , the beauty around us in its varied forms , and the many blessings heaped upon us ( undeserving though we may be !) . Our freedom is one such blessing...one fought hard for by the ultimate sacrifice of brave , dedicated men and women and maintained still by troops here and
    abroad . Thank you , Annie !

  7. Hi Annie, I had a nice visit here and loved your post. My hubby and I went out and bought several smaller flags and put them all over. The kids teased us but we told them we are proud Americans. My dad has his flag all year. We are very blessed to live in this land of freedom. Have a wonderful 4th. Hugs
