Great Gatsby!

Remember The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald?
The novel was made into a movie with  Robert Redford.
I think a remake was also offered not long ago.
But the subject today is the house that was Fitzgerald's inspiration.
It;s latest owners say  it is beyond repair and so it will be sold and  portioned off for a sub division of million dollar homes.
Homes with a million dollar view of Long Island Sound and all the summery perks that go with that.

Long Island has long been home to some of the world's most highly placed and wealthiest people, including European royalty who love it.
Those who stay there in their multi million dollar beach houses say it rivals the Caribbean island for beauty.
They are correct. It really does.
This is the home in question with its 25,000 square feet and 20 rooms.
And you were worried about where to put your 30 weekend guests?
Pshaw.. no problem.
And its just average by Long Island Posh standards. They come with 5 times that many rooms.

Would you care to own a home on Long Island in the posh areas?
Taxes are more than many earn in a year.
Houses begin in the low millions and go up from there.
They include private golf courses, tennis courts, multiple pools, fountains and the lovely ocean views.
You might take long. leisurely walks on country roads on sultry summer afternoons.

But swimming?   Nah.. Long Island has a treacherous  undertow.
Not for me.
I prefer NJ with is gentle waters. Some of the best swimming around.
We have our big homes too. I will share them next time

  1. Hi Annie,
Long Island is lovely. I was there many years ago. As far as living there I would love it since it is in the US but I do love the Caribbean especially St John's Island, St Thomas and St Maarten. The waters are like bath water and so mild and beautiful in color.I loved the Great Gatsby. That home looks great 25 sq feet wow! Is that snow on the ground? Or white rocks? Look forward to your big homes. Hugs, Dru

  2. I loved the book- read it with both Justin and Jessica when they had Honors English. I remember the green light- wasn't it green?- that shone across the waters. I also loved the decor of the house in the movie with the billowing white drapes. I've read a lot of Nelson DeMille novels that are set in that area. I would never want a big home like that! We have so many here that are built on lots that are too small for the home. We call them McMansions. (((Hugz)))

  3. I've never visited Long Island. The house looks wonderful but only if you have a huge income. I prefer the simpler places.

  4. Hi Annie;

I love this post. I read the book and saw the movie with Redford and Farrow. It's still a favorite. The remake years later was a disappointment to me.

i hear parts of New Jersey has declared a state of emergency. I hope your area isn't going to be hit with heavy rains and floods. My area is in a flood watch right now and rain is expected to hang around until the weekend. Right now it's sleeting because we are still around 34 degrees.

Take care and have a lovely day my friend. Hugs

  5. Hi Annie,
So there is a TV show you have to watch :) I never watched that soap but 40 years ago I watched All My Children, General Hospital and One Life to Live. I am a big TV buff as you know I am sure! Also a big movie and play buff. It is my escape :) Hope you have a wonderful Thursday!
    Hugs!!

  6. Hi Annie! Your header is so cute. I wish I had a puppy when I was little. My mom was allergic to dogs, cats and birds so I made do with turtles and things like that. Do you think I'm maybe over-compensating now? ;) (((Hugz)))

  7. You do post the neatest stuff !
The mansions you speak of on Long Island are the stuff of OLD money...very few new comers can afford the expansive grounds and stately homes .
There is a grace to the old places...the designs of some of the new ones make one question the sobriety of the architects ! The beaches are beautiful...the white sugar sand type that we have here, also .
Although the wind is howling like a mad thing , and my trash can has probably blown to Venezuela by now , I comfort myself that we are one day closer to warm weather...yea !
