Reading

I borrowed a few books from my daughter's library     as I am almost done with my second round of Dorothy Sayers' 1938 novel  Busman's Honeymoon which is part of the Lord Peter Wimsey series of mysteries.
Very well written as she is considered one of the best mystery writers of all time.
Lord Peter Wimsey
and his trademark monocle.

It is good to be able to read French, however, since she splatters tons through the books including whole paragraphs from time to time. But none of it is necessary  really and you can enjoy the books just the same.
I enjoy old British mysteries. I am not fond of the newer things because of the language and the situations that I find too gross sometimes. And although I am a fan of Robert Parker and his Jesse Stone and Spenser for Hire series, I am not overly fond of the nasty words .
Older novelists wrote just as well without using profanity or blatant sex in books.
So I borrowed  Up in the Old Hotel by Joseph Mitchell  a book of short biographies of people in a certain New York City neighborhood.
Violette by Charlotte Bronte to read it a second time, and Sanditon by Jane Austen and "Another Lady" who completed the 11 chapters of Sanditon that Jane never finished. It has wonderful reviews from readers and critics.

So my reading is set for the next little while.
What are you reading?

  1. Hi Annie,
I did love the TV show Spencer For Hire :) I only like true crime and autobiographies. I just finished Ann Rule's Dead by Sunset. I have read all her books. Thw famous ones of course like Diane Downs Small Sacfrices and the other imfamous Ted Bundy The Stranger Beside Me. This is what is in the Caribbean Chicken salad: Black beans, pico de gallo, and crisp iceberg lettuce topped with vinaigrette dressing, grilled chicken and pineapple, fresh tomato, avacado, Monterey jack cheese and raisins and crispy tortilla strips.
    Hugs, Dru

  2. Ciao Annie :)
I am readying the Lily Bard "Shakespeare" series by Charlaine Harries. I just started book # 5 (the last one of the series) and I am quite enjoying it. I sure will look for more C.H. books 'cos I also really liked the Sookie Stackhouse series and the Harper Connelly series. Next I will read George's Secret Key to the Universe, a children's book written by Stephen and Lucy Hawking that I got from a friend. I also have two new (for me) books by Stephen King. Reading is one of my favorite pastime. I read widely in mystery, science fiction, fantasy, plus a little romance and a little non-fiction. It all depends on my mood.
I hope you are having a lovely hump day. :)

  3. I love English mysteries too. I just finished one called Left Early, Took My Dog. I really liked it but it is a modern one. I read almost all of Dorothy Sayers books. Did you know that she had a child out of wedlock?-as they used to say. She didn't raise him. I think there was a book out about her a while ago.

  4. "The Seventh Beggar" by Pearl Abraham.
Her books are wonderful: esp "The Romance Reader" - grab a copy, you won't regret it.

  7. This seemed to be a good time to re-read "Seven Keys For Doubling Your Standard Of Living (Without Increasing Your Income )by Noah Fuhrman . It was written in 1982 , but the cost-cutting hints seem relevant to today's "challenges".I must confess to resorting to the curl-up-and-leave-me-alone gentle romances of Debbie Macomber,Nora Roberts and Barbara Delinsky...a lovely way to go on mental vacation.
Your header is so dear...love the buddies by moonlight...makes me miss my own...
Be well , my friend !
