Sounds of Summer

This morning before I got up I heard a woodpecker. How in the world do they bang their beaks that fast? The rat-a-tat-tat sounds like a machine gun because it is so rapid fire.
 Anyway, it was 46 ° F and the birds were out in full force, those that remain here that is.  I thought Woodpeckers went south, but no, not all of them do. Some stay in warm

apartments in hollow trees over the winter.
 Chickadees, Blue Jays and Cardinals are around in abundance and were flitting around and singing through the morning hours and I thought of summer.
Birds are one of the sounds of summer along with outboard motors, dirt bikes, single engine planes over head, lawn mowers, baseball games......
Before bed last night I read a bit of a Spenser novel and a scene had Spenser having rhubarb pie for dessert
and I thought of my mother and summer. I was never a huge fan of rhubarb as a kid. Too stringy, too sweet/tart for my childish tastes.
The book described  a summery scene of  hot air blowing through an open window , approaching thunder squalls and  summery sandwiches.     So I went to sleep on a summer note and woke up on one as well.
Summer was filling my mind early today.

  1. Hi Annie! Your post has now made me long for summer and I actually like winter. lol Last winter Dave bought me our Canary (Sunny) to help with my winter depression. I love hearing the birds in the spring and summer. So now I get to hear them chirping in the winter as well. It actually does help! I'm with you on rhubarb, I never liked it because of it being tart and stringy. I hope you had a great Tuesday. Thanks for your comment, btw. I hope Kris sees it and knows that there are people out there with common sense. :) Hugs

  2. Hi Annie! My mom was a big fan of strawberry rhubarb pie. I guess the sweetness of the strawberry helps but I love tart things so I think I'd be okay with just rhubarb pie. I really wish we had cardinals here. We have so many birds year round but no cardinals. Our prettiest birds are goldfinches and the occasional oriole. Summer storms are also something we don't have in LA. (((Hugz)))

  3. Hi Annie;

    No bird sounds here as the weather has been a true winter type weather. Only today we will hit 50 degrees and then drop down to the 20's & low 30's the rest of the week. As for rhubarb pie, No. Strawberry rhubarb pie, Yes! Love your pie siggie too. ;-} Hugs

  4. Hi Annie,
    I have always wondered how woodpeckers bang their beaks that fast also. Lily gets really excited when she hears it and just sits in the window moving her head up and down with the sound. It will be looking like Summer here soon. We usually warms up in Feb and DST is over in March. Have a wonderful rest of the day. Hugs, Dru
