Too Shy

Another day...

  Saturday 9: Too Shy (1983)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?     Hear it here.

1) This song laments vulnerability and self-consciousness in a social settings. Are you often "too shy?" Or are social gatherings easy for you?
I am a very reserved person and I don't like amall talk but I am not shy.

2) In the lyrics, a girl self-censors, telling herself, "hush hush."  Have you more recently shushed someone, or were you shushed?
I've been shushed and I resent it quite a lot.

3) Band member Nick Beggs recalls that they called themselves Kajagoogoo because it sounded like something that would make a baby laugh. It is fun to say. Can you think of another word that you just enjoy saying?
Tintinabulation.. the tinkling of tiny bells.  It's used in the Edgar Allen Poe poem "The Bells"

4) This was the only US hit for the British band, earning Kajagoogoo the title "One Hit Wonder." Can you think of another artist or band who had one really popular song and then just kind of disappeared?
I found this list:
  • The Lemon Pipers: "Green Tambourine"
  • Zager & Evans: "In the Year 2525"
  • The Singing Nun: "Dominique" (good! nasty woman. Singing about the murder of thousands of Albigensians (also called Cathars) in such a happy manner.)
  • Norman Greenbaum: "Spirit in the Sky"
  • Steam: "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye"
  • The Crazy World of Arthur Brown: "Fire"
  • The Hollywood Argyles: "Alley Oop"
  • The New Vaudeville Band: "Winchester Cathedral"
  • The Surfaris: "Wipe Out"
  • Barry McGuire: "Eve of Destruction" ( we've been on the eve of destruction for thousands of years now.. sigh.   I hate fear porn)
  • The Tornados: "Telstar"
5) Though fame was fleeting here, Kajagoogoo remained popular in England. Lead singer Limahl recalls the adulation as "overwhelming," and he was shocked when he stepped on stage in Cornwall to see row after row of fans wearing their hair like he did. Have you ever handed a photo to a stylist and said, "Make my hair look like this?"
 No.  Never did that.
6) In 1983, when this song was popular, the Lotus 1-2-3 program made it easier for PC users to make spreadsheets. Are you answering these questions on a Mac or PC? Laptop, phone or tablet?
A PC.

7) 1983 saw Abbey Road Studios open their doors for the first time for public tours. During the first two months, 22,000 tickets were sold to fans who wanted to see where the Beatles made their magic. What's the last ticket you purchased?
I can't remember ever buying a ticket for anything/   My boyfriends, husband did that.

8) Also in 1983, McDonald's introduced Chicken McNuggets. When was chicken most recently on the menu at your home? How was it prepared?
 I made a chicken tetrazini.

9) Random question: Have you ever forgotten where you left your car in a parking lot?
Yes, but eventually found where he parked it.

  2. I was going to say that surely you looked up that list of one hit wonders! I would never have remembered all of those to list them, but I do remember all except the last one. Funny answer to the last question...that's exactly how it was here too. Hubby decided to park the car in a totally different aisle at Walmart than where we normally park it. He couldn't remember and I had no clue since he had dropped me off at the door and then went and parked it. We looked pretty silly walking through the parking lot with our buggy full of groceries looking for our car. Someone even came by and offered to drive us around until we found it. LOL. We said no thank you, but it was nice of them to offer. It's been a while since I bought a ticket to anything, but most likely it was the last time we flew to Maine for our grandson's graduation in 2019. Yes, I've been shushed too, even had someone rap the gavel on the table at me (and the others who were talking to me) at one of our ladies' meetings at church. I was embarrassed and a bit unhappy about it, but I had to let it go because that dear soul who did it is now in heaven. Life is too short to carry unforgiveness in our hearts, and I WAS talking when the meeting was supposed to be starting...so there you have it...it just took me by surprise. But we carry on and give thanks it wasn't something really bad. LOL.
Hope you are starting to feel better! (((hugs)))

  3. I recall almost all of the songs you listed as one-hit wonders, but never knew that was the only popular song by that person/group. No, I don't like being shushed either, especially when I know I'm not interrupting a conversation, but have a good point to add to it. And I'm familiar with the tintinabulation word thanks to my Latin teacher in high school. Trying to make Latin more viable, she taught us Jingle Bells in that language. "Tinnitus, tinnitus, semper tinnitus." LOL! What our minds hold onto. Blessings, Annie!

  5. I always liked In the Year 2525. I still listen to it sometimes. And tintinnabulation is a great word!
