Here are my answers for Tuesday 4 this week:
1. What are some essential classic books that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime?
Thi is a very partial list of books we read in Middle School and High School:
- David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
- Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
- Moby Dick by Herman Melville
- The Odyssey by Homer
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
- Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
- Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky
- The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
- The Iliad by Homer
- The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
- On the Road by Jack Kerouac
- Most of the greatest plays by Shakespeare
- A Passage to India by E. M. Forster
- Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
- The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
- The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton
- Walden by Henry David Thoreau
- The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer (I've been to Walden Pond in the Autumn have you?)
- Call of the Wild by Jack London
Would you make up a list for us of books that you think would make great Autumn reading?
Early Autumn by Robert Parker.. a mystery.
44 Charles Street by Danielle Steele.. mystery romance
Hallowe'en Party by Agatha Christie....mystery
Dead Man's Folly by Agatha Christie... mystery with Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver.
Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers
Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving... set in New York's Catskill mountains in the real town of Tarrytown NY..
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt... set in lovely old Savannah,Georgia and a true story.
3 What genre will we find most in your library? Sci Fi, Romance, adventure, biography, non fiction, mystery? What do you like most about the genre?
You will find a lot of different things from romance to history and biography but I am very partial to mysteries! You will find a lot of Agatha Christie, Robert Parker.
What I like most about the genre is trying to guess 'who done it!'
4 What book would you like to see made into a movie? Any idea on who should be cast in the rolls?
Danielle Steel books always make good made for TV movies. I'd like to see 44 Charles Street made into a movie. I think Sandra Bullock would be good but probably too old at 60. I don't really know the younger actrisses of today.

I like your selection of classic books to read.
ReplyDeleteI think I've read all but about five books on your classics list, Annie. Yes, I majored in English - LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited to read everyones answers from todays questions. Yours were great. I should probably start reading more classics...or not..haha.
ReplyDeleteOh, your list of classics brought back some memories! I don't think I've read all of those, but definitely quite a few! I'd forgotten about them! We also had to read 1984 by George Orwell in our senior English class. Back then (in 1968) it seemed surreal, but nowadays I'd say most of it has already come true...it just didn't quite make it by 1984. I don't really make up lists of books to read, I kind of read them as I find them...or if someone recommends them, and if our library has it. I tend to work through one author at a time until I've exhausted the supply, and then move on to another author. I'll have to give this some more thought before I can do this meme for this week. I'm having to scratch my head about some of it! LOL.
ReplyDeleteMysteries are such a god choice for Autumn. Toni got me started on Agatha Christie. Loved your answers! Have a nice week.

For some reason I thought I posted here already. I have read half your list. I would add Gone with the Wind since it is over 75 years old. I started reading Trixie Belden Mysteries in grade school and it made me love reading.
ReplyDeleteIn the 5th and 6th grades , in a tiny country school , both grades were in the same room . Under the double window was a two-shelf bookcase with books of every
ReplyDeletegenre . My love of reading was established as each book in turn was read !
Great list of books, some I've read, some I haven't but would like to. In 8th grade we read Great Expectations in class everyday. I loved it. Hope your enjoyed a great day.♥
