I enjoy these old 1950's service videos. You get to see a bit of the past but it also brings up some subjects that are very neglected today like manners and tradition.
Does your family do formal dinners? I always have, especially on holidays etc. I think it is especially important for children that special days be set apart with foods usually not eaten, dressy clothing and more formality. It is a great experience for everyone too.
First, it strengthens the family unit and makes the family special and important.
Mealtimes are so important for everyone and traditions and routine at home is essential I think because it draws people together and it draws a line between the workaday world and the world of family and special times together.
Today people live singular lives. They eat on the run, talk on the run and clothing is the same wherever people seem to go. I was taught that it shouldn't be that way.
One difference in my home was that animals are fed before the family eats dinner. The bible commands that. Then the youngest to the oldest were served.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.It should be something continued and not kept in the past.
Hi Annie,
ReplyDeleteWe always had dinner together growing up but living in So Cal the atire has always been casual and we never dressed up. I am here at work with my jeans and tennis shoes which I love because I save so much money not having to buy business atire and since I work at the hospital on the weekends and I am locked into a private office where I work I can also dress casual. And dinners are always casual at my sons house it is just the way he grew up. A big difference is that when I grew up there was not a lot of going out to dinner that has all changed in the last 25 years or more so even the kids go out to dinner a few times a week. I go out to dinner quite a bit since I live alone and work to hard and to much to want to cook dinner for myself. I find it a great pleasure going out to dinner with friends and family to nice restaurants. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Hugs, Dru
Wonderful post Annie;
ReplyDeleteI remember those days well. I do miss the family dinners and the holiday special dinners we used to love. With most of the family in different states now those days are gone for me. Living alone you get in the habit of eating when you feel like and the only other voice is on the TV for conversation.
Have a lovely weekend my friend and I'm happy to be back online too. ;-}
Ciao Annie, happy Sunday.
ReplyDeleteI have never liked "formal" dinners or to dress up. Not for me. But eating together at least once a day is quite important for an Italian family. And a pleasure too. :)
Have a lovely weekend, and I hope you are feeling much better! :)
Happy Sunday Annie :)
ReplyDeleteHi Annie! When the kids were growing up, we always sat down and ate together but formal dinners were reserved for holidays and special occasions. Our pets always eat first. They will wonder what got into me when I feed the "early" because of the time change. They usually know when it's 5 PM and start watching my every move. Enjoy the week ahead! (((Hugz)))
ReplyDeleteThis was fun to think back on meals with the family. When growing up we always ate together though maybe not dressing very formal. It was always at the table though with everyone present. After I was married we always ate at the table as a family also although having two boys I did most of the work! Now days with the boys grown and out on their own with families of their own it is just me and the hubby. Mostly we eat away from the table but on Holidays or if we have company we are back at the table. Holiday meals are still special and celebrated as such. I think family meals together make a big difference in attitudes and behavior. Okay..yes I am old :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Annie. Happy Monday! Family dinners are VERY important in our house. I always feel that family meals are what keeps a family strong. Also, just about every Sunday are formal Sunday dinners. I loved the video and I completely agree that it should be continued. Have a wonderful day!
