We are under a coastal flood watch but when aren't we? Yes, I am close to the water.. a few blocks with streams all around the property. I flooded once in the yard with 4 ft of water during the Perfect Storm of '91. George Clooney was in a movie about that storm if you recall.
Sandy knocked out power in frigid October for a few weeks.. in the 30's and no heat.. brrrr.
Now.. on to Hodgepodge....
1. What's worth standing in line for?
These days nothing at all. I can't recall when something really ever was.
2. Tell us about a favorite food related memory.
My Grandmother's pies. She was a pipe organist, piano teacher and a baker. She sold pies and bread during the depression to earn money for the family. No one, but no one makes pies like she did.. Apple, Shoo Fly, Lemon Meringue, the very best in the world.
3. What are some things you find particularly peaceful or calming?
Being by myself. I enjoy it very much.
4. Is there something you do now that gets you just as excited as it did when you were a child?
Watching the trains come and go.
5. To what degree are you in touch with friends from grade school? high school? college if you attended college?
Many of them live nearby but I am not in contact with any of them.
6. Insert your own random thought here. ...
Flags are out.. no swimming, rip currents. As a kid, probably around 10 or so, I was dragged about a mile down by a rip.

I finally made it out following the tips my father had taught me. Regarding the ocean, he had said to me "you have no fear". He was right. I didn't. I wasn't too scared then either but I realized I should be. I walked back up the beach and never told my parents. I felt so stupid. In reality Iwas lucky to be alive and I knew it.

I live in a town that has a lot of trains that come through. I love the sound of the trains at night. The sound is so soothing.
ReplyDeleteYes! I love it too.
DeleteOh, how your memory of your grandmother's pies brings back my own. My mother used to make her pie crust from scratch and her apple pies were to die for. When my brother was older, he always asked for one of mom's pies instead of a cake. I know y'all are having those terrible rip tides but I know you'll stay safe, Annie. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteOur pie crusts were from scratch as well and the crust is what makes or breaks a pie. I will not be going in the ocean any time soon Martha Jane!
DeleteDo you know, I can never ever make a crust from scratch, now, my husband, he has nailed it 100%...anyways, one should fear the ocean, just saying. smiles
ReplyDeleteThe rip tide is a scary story and glad you were able to get out of it unharmed. I love a homemade pie, maybe more than a piece of cake. My grandma's coconut cream was the best and I've never been able to duplicate it. Hope you have a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of trains. My dad has always loved trains and when I was a kid most of our vacations were camping or road trips, and Dad preferred campgrounds that were near enough to a railroad track that we could hear the trains. Dad often pulled over on the highway to get out and take a picture of a train and knew by their numbers the engines he already had photographed! Hope you're having a great week!
ReplyDeleteI love the trains also, but we just don't really have any that close to us here. Although there is a depot in the nearest "city", about 15 miles away, and you can actually get on the Amtrak train there! Sometime I just might have to do that! LOL. I've been thinking about you and this storm, and praying the waters don't come too close to you or do any serious flooding nearby. Oh yes, those rip tides are scary. I can remember being caught in a strong undertow and had a hard time coming up for air. That was very scary. Your grandmother's pies sound wonderful. My mother was also an excellent pie baker, and she always made her own crusts. Her specialty was apple pie and coconut cream pie, but she could bake most any kind. Those were the two that people asked for the most. Oh, and she'd always make a mince meat pie at Thanksgiving for my father and brothers. I never cared much for it. And yes, I always asked for an apple pie for my birthday in September, when the apples were fresh! Take care my friend. I'm sorry you are hurting so much. Praying it will get better as the weather changes!!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you have been in pain.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to read about your Grandmother. Her pies do sound good.
That sounds scary being dragged out in the sea.
Lovely header...one of my favorites !
ReplyDeletePraying for your healing and comfort...
My mother learned well from her mother , who was an excellent cook and hostess . Among all the goodies , I just remembered my favorite birthday cake - a rich , moist devil's food cake , chocolate pudding filling , Seven-Minute Frosting and bittersweet chocolate drizzles ! The combination of flavors and textures was amazing !
Caught up in a rip current, that had to be very scary. My mother was also an excellent baker, her lemon meringue pie was to die for. Wouldn't it be great to go back in time for just a day and visit these dear ladies who left us so many precious memories. Hope you're enjoying a good day, ((hugs)).
ReplyDeleteI like looking at the beach and the ocean I don't like sand or being in the water much
ReplyDeleteJust checking in with you, Annie to see how you are and if Erin is going to be affecting you. That storm is huge! Take care and stay safe.
ReplyDeleteThat's nice about your grandmother's pies. I enjoyed reading your answers and I'm glad you got out of the rip tide.
