Highs are in the low 20°F's like the old fashioned winters when I was a little girl.
In later years when temperatures for most of the winter climbed to the 40s-50s, winter had lost most of it's charm and fun. No skating or hockey on the ponds, no sledding on the hills, no building snowmen, snowball fights, o snow fort building and the wonderful glow of cherry red cheeks. We loved it and it went on through most of the winter months.
We ice skated every day and the hills were for sleighs and sleds. A big pot belly stove gave heat in the wooden shack and the hot chocolate in thermoses was so good.
This year kids are once again out skating on creeks, rivers, lakes and it's wonderful to see the pick up hockey games the boys are involved in this year.
I have missed a good old fashioned winter.
Here is this week's Saturday: 9.
A Summer Song (1964)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) Are you enjoying winter? Or do you daydream about summer?
I am just fine and dandy with winter. I will be fine and dandy with spring, summer and fall.
2) In this week's song, trees sway in the breeze. Is it windy where you are today?
Not today, no. Has been and the sounds of wind barreling through the woods was wonderful.
We have had snow.
4) This week's artists are the duo Chad and Jeremy. As a teen, Chad Stuart was very versatile in the arts. While he enjoyed drawing, he showed real promise in music and won a scholarship to London's Central School of Speech and Drama. When you were a teenager, what were your best classes?
English and Chemistry and History and French and Home Management and Gym.. sorry but I loved all of them!!
5) Between 1965 and 1966, Chad and Jeremy played British pop stars on a variety of American TV shows, including The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Patty Duke Show, and Batman. Which of those series do you remember?
I remember all of those shows. They kept showing up as re-runs for years.
6) While those TV appearances were good for the duo's record sales, they sowed the seeds of dissent between the friends. Jeremy Clyde realized he enjoyed acting far more than music and began threatening to leave the act. Chad finally got tired of dissuading him. Between Jeremy's dramatic aspirations and contract disputes, they broke up. Later they both admitted they regretted the split, but as Chad said, "we were just kids." Is there an old friend you've drifted away from but miss?
There is Helen. My sister in law Karen who was a good friend but passed away in a horrible accident long ago now. The two Jackies.. there were 2 of them I valued. One has passed away now.
Sharon.. we could get silly and enjoy music together. I knew most of them since kindergarten or high school. I had an awful lot of friends I miss now. Hopefully I will see them all again.
7) In 1964, when "A Summer Song" was popular, the #1 movie in the country was Mary Poppins. Have you seen it?
Yes.
8) One of the biggest news stories of 1964 was Elizabeth Taylor's wedding to Richard Burton. The bride wore yellow, with yellow and white flowers in her hair. The groom wore a dark suit, red tie and yellow boutonniere. What did you wear last time you got dressed up.
For the Opera I wore my long black satin dress.
9) Random question: When you're in the backseat, do you wear a seatbelt?
Yes, I do wear a seatbelt.

I loved that song so much, Annie, and I always wear a seat belt no matter where I'm sitting in a car. Blessings, and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteYou painted such a delightful picture in my mind of your ice-skating years. Being from the south I've never experienced that pleasure. Hope you're enjoying a great day☺♥
ReplyDeleteps . . .I did a lot of roller skating in my younger years!!
ReplyDeleteA long black satin dress at the opera! That sounds simply magical!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't love a good winter (at least not the cold and snow of it), but I do like seeing kids out on the sledding hills again for the first time in quite a few years.
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived "up north" it was fun to see the kids skating/sledding, etc. I never tried ice skating, but I did use to roller skate. I did get to go on a horse drawn sleigh ride in NH one time when we went back up to visit our kids and we took our grandson Noah with us. It was such fun. I would love to do that again sometime. I don't mind the snowy weather when I can enjoy it and not have to deal with it every day driving to work, etc. Now that I am retired I might enjoy it more than I did then. I remember Chad and Jeremy. That was back in "my day". LOL. That song brought back some sweet memories from my teen days...Wow. Seems like another life...I guess it was...I was only 14 that year...that's a LONG time ago! Thanks for the memories. Bye for now.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your post. I think I was in high school the first time I went ice skating. I wasn't very good, but I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you were eager to learn everything
ReplyDeleteI really liked my chemistry teacher, but I bombed in his class because I could not do the math. I tried ice skating and it killed my ankles and I was all bruised up. I have only experienced snow about a dozen times. I hope to get to the snow this winter.
ReplyDeleteY'all can keep the weather, I have had enough of the cold that we have been getting. Wishing you a beautiful day, Annie.
ReplyDeleteWonderful header !
ReplyDeleteMy favorite winter memories are mostly from the inside , looking out - the smell of woodsmoke in the fireplace...the meals my mother cooked in that fireplace when we lost power and how cozy Dad kept us in that room . I remember the deep quiet on a windless day , as snow fell softly and all seemed to be at peace . Good memories .
