Somewhere Over Laredo

Hi friends,
Another stormy weekend ....

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every
Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Somewhere Over Laredo (2025)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it HERE

1) In this song, Laney Wilson namechecks Tito's Vodka. Is there a product you you are very brand loyal to? (It doesn't have to be liquor. Maybe you always reach for Dawn Dishwashing Liquid, even if another soap is on sale.)
I am loyal to Rienzi canned  products from Italy. They are natural and extremely low sodium and healthy.

2) The lyrics start with her in a window seat on a flight out of Houston. Do you prefer the window or the aisle?  Aisle seat. I don't want to climb over people and I don't care what's outside.

3) She's dreaming of rodeo nights with the guy she loves. If you could spend this evening with anyone at all, anywhere at all, where would you go and who would be with you?
Out to dinner with my friends and family.

4) Lainey is from Baskin, LA, population 200. Do you prefer big cities or small towns?
Both have their place.   I live in a small coastal community now but I wouldn't mind living in New  York City at all.

5) There's a Netflix documentary about Lainey called Keepin' Country Cool. What show have you recently streamed?   I haven't streamed anything in a while but I do watch a number of things on YouTube.

6) This week's song borrows liberally from "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," so much so that "Rainbow" songwriters Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg receive credit. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is the most beloved song from The Wizard of Oz.    Can you name another?
If you mean from the movie it would be the songs  If I Only Had a Brain and Follow the Yellow Brick Road.  Oh.. and  We're Off to See the Wizard.

7) In 2025, when this song was popular, more patients took advantage of telehealth than ever before. Have you ever had a virtual doctor visit?
No.

8) Also in 2025, smart home technology was integrated into more new home construction. Do you use smart devices to automate your lights, thermostat, or doorbell?
No but I do have a smart device. I use it for time, weather,  information and to make hands free emergency photo calls..

9) Random question – On which day are you happier: a) the day you take off on vacation or b) the day you return home from your trip?
It's exciting to go and it's a pleasure to return home again.  I think they are about equal.

Working in the Coal Mine

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday.

Working in the Coal Mine (1966)

My maternal grandfather and great grand worked as coal miners. It was a terrible, dangerous, hard job and the great grand had a mine blow up in his face.

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?             Hear it here.

1) In this song, Lee Dorsey sings that at 5:00 he's already on the job. What were you doing this morning at 5:00 AM?

I was still sleeping in my cozy bed.(Friday AM)

2) He's worked so hard all week that he's too tired to enjoy his weekend. What are you doing for fun this holiday weekend?

There is nothing planned.

3) Lee Dorsey was raised in Portland Oregon, home of the Portland Trailblazers. The NBA season kicks off next month. Do you have a favorite basketball team?

I live close to Philadelphia and to New York City.  So I will split it between the Philly 76ers and the New York Knicks.\

4) This song was written by Allen Toussaint, who had a long career as a composer and producer. He produced Fats Domino in the late 1950s and worked with Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney into the new millennium. What job have you held the longest?   The longest was the best.... raising kids and being a mom.

5) In 1966, the year this song was popular, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey was born. Are you a good cook?             Yes, people do seem to like my food.   Speaking of which, the Little arrived at Culinary Institute of America on Thursday ready to start her first semester.    While still in high school she worked for a Michelin chef who found her to be very talented.   *Proud"

6) 1966 was the year when more Americans purchased color TVs and black and white sets. When you were a kid, did your family have a black and white TV?

Sure.  As a kid that was what we all had.

7) Labor Day is a big weekend for mattress sales. Do you plan on buying a new mattress before the year is out?

I bought one just a few years ago. Queen size no less and I am not happy with the huge size of it or the price of sheets for queens. But, it is what it is.

8) Though kids go back to class earlier these days, store aisles are still full of school supplies. When she was a little girl, Sam was crazy about her big box of 96 Crayola Crayons with a sharpener in the back. Share one of your back-to-school memories.

walking to school
In New Jersey you don't go back until after Labor Day.   My fond memories include walking down the street toward school and   collecting pockets full of chestnuts!

9) Labor Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of fall. Have you had any pumpkin spice yet?

Yes.  I made myself a pumpkin spice coffee Friday morning with Ceylon cinnamon and some pumpkin spice powder, pumpkin puree, heavy cream and nutmeg.

Leather and Lace

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: Leather and Lace (1981)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?  Hear it here

1) As you answer these questions, are you wearing leather, lace, or both?

My houseshoes are leather.

2. This song is a duet between members of two superstar groups – Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac and Don Henley of The Eagles. Which band do you listen to more often, Fleetwood Mac or The Eagles?

I really don't listen to either anymore but, I would rather hear the Eagles if given  a choice.

3) In this duet, "lace" tells us she is stronger than we know and "leather" admits that sometimes he's vulnerable. Do either side of this lyrical equation apply to you? Do you think you're either tougher than people realize, or more sensitive than they know?                  I am both.

4) Both Stevie and Don are born Westerners. Stevie spent her early childhood in Arizona and Don was born in Texas and stayed there through college. Today Stevie has two homes – one in Pacific Palisades and another in Phoenix – while Don has a beautiful home in Dallas. Do you feel rooted where you are? Or can you see yourself moving to another city or state in the future?

I love New Jersey.  It's a beautiful state.  I know my body would feel better physically in Utah or Arizona but I will probably not be moving.

5) Stevie and Don were romantically involved in the 1970s, but after they broke up they remained friendly. Not only did they record this song in 1981, they went on tour together in 2005. Have you recently heard from an ex?

No.

6) Stevie admits a lifelong passion for Animal Crackers, those little cookies shaped like tigers, bears and elephants.  Is your go-to snack sweet, like Stevie's, or is it salty?          I am more of a salty fan.

7) Don likes Velveeta on his burgers. Describe your ideal cheeseburger.

I don't eat cheeseburgers, so .there is that .  But my ideal burger is medium, with carmalized onion, kosher dill slice, ketchup , mustard and a bit of horse radish sauce. Sometimes I like tomato on it too.

8) In 1981, when this song was popular, both Maserati and Mercedes Benz introduced luxury convertibles. Have you ever owned a convertible? Would a convertible be practical for your lifestyle?

Never owned a convertible and I would not be interested in owning or driving one either.

9) Random question: What are you most looking forward to this week?

 Having a quiet, happy week

Saturday 9 Man I Need

Welcome to the weekend friends.
It's cold with rain and snow forecast.    It will be  a weekend of  deep sleep in my warm, soft bed!

We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Man I Need (2025)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?     Hear it here.

1) In this song, Olivia Dean is looking for a man who wants to really communicate and doesn't make her "read between the lines." Tell us about a time when you felt you had to work hard to figure out what someone was trying to tell you.
I don't want to work hard at it. If you can't just make it plain then it seems likely you don't know what you are talking about anyway.

2) She's eager to meet his best friend and join their friend group.   Have you made any new friends recently?
Not lately.

3) "Man I Need" was a hit in the fall of 2025. It was so popular that, in addition to CDs, a special vinyl release was scheduled in time for Christmas (2025) gift giving. How do you listen to music most often? Do you play CDs, download, stream, or play vinyl records?
Sreaming mainly, YouTube as well.

4) Olivia Dean recalls that her first public performance was singing at a school talent show. If we had a Sat 9 talent show, what would you do to entertain us?
 I have no idea.

5) She says she loved listening to her parents' music collection. How about you? Did you and your parents share musical tastes? How about you and your kids?
Yes I share with everyone.

6) Olivia likes to be dressed up when she gets onstage, favoring gowns and heels. She says of her audiences, "If you guys paid good money that you worked hard for, let me give you a show." How do you feel when you're invited to an event that calls for you to dress up? Are you enthusiastic about choosing your outfit, or would you rather keep it casual?
Dressing up can be nice but casual is more comfortable.

7) She enjoys classic film and lists Singin' in the Rain as her favorite. What's the last movie you watched? Do you recommend it to other Sat 9ers?
Rear Window starring Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly and Raymon Burr.  Very good, very entertaining it's a Hitchcock movie.

8) In 2025, when this song was popular, the average price tag for a new vehicle was $47,690 and $25,100 for a used one. Are you planning to make a big purchase in 2026?
Yes, most likely.

9) Random question: Are you better with love or money?    Better in what way?

Saturday 9 Volare!

Happy weekend friends . I am joining with Saturday 9 again this week.  I usually write these on Thrusday morning or early Friday.

"Welcome to Saturday 9. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme! "

Saturday 9: Volare (1960)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.   This is not the one I grew up hearing.  The original was by Domenico Modugno

1) The word "volare" is Italian for "to fly." Say something else in Italian.
Cosa fai? (what are you doing)  New Jersey is overwhelmingly Italian and most of the Italian I know is not fit to print.

2) This week, Bobby Rydell invites us to take off with him up in the clouds and promises we'll find a rainbow. Countless lyricists have included rainbows in their songs. Can you name another song that mentions rainbows?
Rainbow Connection, Somwhere Over the Rainbow.

3) His happy heart is singing. What is making you happy this morning?
You will have to settle for Thursday morning   My Fuller Carpet Sweeper arrived.

4) Bobby Rydell, like Frankie Avalon and Fabian, was a 1950s teen idol who hailed from Philadelphia. Home to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, Philly is Pennsylvania's most populous city. Have you ever been there?
I live on the coast of New Jersey just about an hour and a quarter from Philly.  Yes,  I have been there many times.  I am also only about an hour and a half from New York City.

5) Bobby was such a perfect example of a clean-cut American boy that when Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey sat down to write the play Grease, they named their fictional high school Rydell High after him. Do you have a favorite song from Grease?
Beauty School Dropout is cute.

6) In addition to singing, Bobby also acted. His most famous film role was opposite Ann-Margret in Bye, Bye, Birdie (1963). Have you seen it?
Yes, a few times.

7) In 1960, when this record was popular, so were hand-loomed, 100% virgin wool sweaters from Italy. You could order one from the Sears catalog for $12.60 (approx. $135 in today's dollars). That sweater was labeled "dry clean only." Do you have any garments waiting to be picked up from the cleaners?
No I don't have anything at the cleaners.

8) Also in 1960, Princess Margaret married photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones. They met when he was commissioned to take her official portrait. Who took the most recent photo of you?
 One of the kids.

9) Random question: Is your oldest friend also your best friend?
Yes, for sure and really now a part of the family.

Holiday

Happy weekend friends .
The wind is seriously wild here today and it will continue into the night, but I have a pot of bean  chili made with some chipotle powder, and some nice sour cream to top it off so the sounds of the wild wind howling through the cedars and pines will be welcome and make things very cozy indeed.

We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

 From the archives

1. As you can see, when Sam Winters was a little girl, she loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. If you could ask Santa for anything at all, right now, what would it be?

An end to the nonsense in the world.  Another Purim in Australia would be nice. . Good luck with that, I know.  I would ask him to not allow the Kennedy Center name to be changed.
2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there?   We say that to be nice to the evil is to be evil to the nice.  I hope I am on the nice list but let me never tolerate evil.

3. Are you traveling this Christmas? If so, are you going by car, plane or train?
I am staying home, no travelling hopefully.

4. Did you ship any gifts to friends and family this year? If yes, which one traveled the farthest?
Nothing is being shipped out this year.

5. Did you buy yourself a gift this year?  No, but thinking about it.

6. Which do you prefer: candy canes or gingerbread?  I like Gingerbread.    I like it as long as the cake isn't dry but is nice and moist and served with tons of whipped cream and a hot cup of tea.
However, I don't eat sugar and carbs so.. not having any cakes or candy at all.   The best gingerbread mix was by Jiffy but it's discontinued.   Most other gingerbreads are way too spicey. I've yet to have one
I liked at all and I am no fan of gingerbread cookies.
7. Can you see any holiday decorations from where you're sitting now?
Yes. I see menorahs in windows on some houses and lights on others, trees in front windows.

8. What's your favorite winter beverage?  Hot tea!  It goes with everything. I used to like hot chocolate with tons of marshmallow but can't have it anymore.

9. Share a memory from last Christmas.  For me, holidays are always about the people involved and the things we do together.

Thanks

Hello friends.

Saturday 9: Thank You Girl (1964)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?   Hear it HERE

1) Who were you talking to the last time you said, "thank you?"
My oldest son

2) Paul McCartney recalls that "Thank You Girl" was inspired by all the female fans who had written them fan letters, pledging undying love. Have you ever written a fan letter? If yes, did you receive a response?
Yes, I wrote a letter to a Clearasil girl named Candy who lived in Ohio.  She was so pretty and she promoted Clearasil and  seemed so very nice.  She wrote me back a very kind letter and a photograph.

3) Recording engineer Geoff Emerick remembered that John Lennon was easily winded while recording this song. John had a bad cold and went back to bed when they were done for the day. We're in cold/flu season right now. How are you feeling?
I am feeling alright.

4) "Thank You Girl" is this week's song because November 27 was Thanksgiving. What are you thankful for this year?
I am thankful for life.

5) While the big meal is referred to as Thanksgiving dinner, most Americans enjoy it earlier than they usually serve dinner. 3:00 PM is the most popular time for the holiday feast. When did you have dinner on Thursday?
Turkey, prime rib, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing... etc.

6) Cranberry sauce has been a Thanksgiving staple since the late 1800s. Was it on your menu this year?
Always.  We like it a lot.

7) The Thanksgiving Turducken is said to have originated in New Orleans. Chef Paul Prudhomme is often cited as the first to stuff a deboned chicken into a deboned duck into a deboned turkey. Prudhomme's recipe has more than 85 individual steps and takes a full day to prepare. Did you face any challenges while cooking your Thursday dinner?
Not me.. someone else cooked for us this year.

8) Leftovers are popular after Thanksgiving, especially turkey sandwiches. Some cooks recommend serving cold, sliced turkey on wheat bread, but white bread, pitas and flatbread are also popular. When you head into the kitchen to make a sandwich, what's your go-to bread?

Usually Ezekiel bread but being from NJ I also love Kaiser rolls, Portuguese rolls and of course  I love, love, love  challah.

9) The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday, the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season and sales. Black Friday got its name in Philadelphia back in the 1950s to describe the traffic clogging both highways and side streets as consumers raced out in search of bargains. When is the last time you were stuck in traffic?
I don't remember being stuck in traffic ever really. I might have been but I just don't recall.

Lady in Red

My days are backwards lately. Up at night with discomfort, sleeping in the day .  This will pass.
But, in the meantime a message to geo-engineers:  "It's not nice to fool mother nature!"
Now, on to more important things like Saturday 9.

Welcome to Saturday  9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday.

Saturday 9: The Lady in Red (1986)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Is red a color you often wear?
I have a dark red sweater and a screaming red Rutgers tee shirt but I don't wear it often.  As a "winter" as far as coloring goes,  red is supposed to look nice for me.

 2) In this song, Chris De Burgh is thrilled to be dancing with the woman he loves. Do you recall what was playing the last time you stepped onto the dance floor?
I dance at home, usually sitting down now, but I move and my feet can still cut a rug.  Song the other day was Uptown Funk.

3) Chris says he wrote this song about the first time he saw his future wife, who wore a red dress when she came to see his band perform. Tell us about a memorable concert going experience.
I really enjoyed  seeing Elmer Bernstein at Carnegie Hall.
I once missed a concert by Itzhak Perlman but I think I would have loved that one a whole lot!
(just an fyi.. Itzhak is Isaac in English) but the trip was a school trip and got cancelled.

I don't and never did go to rock concerts. It's just not for me but I have seen the Trans Siberian Orchestra in Atlantic City and way back in the day I saw the Osmond brothers who were super talented. They could dance, sing and play every musical instrument you can imagine.

4) Chris' father worked as a diplomat for the United Kingdom. Former US ambassador Robert D. Blackwill believes a diplomat should possess strong writing/speaking skills, meticulous attention to detail, historical knowledge, and stamina. Do you have any of those attributes?
I was a decent public speaker and spoke before the NJ State Legislature a long while back.  I have some historical knowledge.. but, I really am not a good judge of myself or my capabilities.

Dorothy Parker: Jersey girl

5) Chris' family owns Bargy Castle, a 15th century fortress in County Wexford, Ireland. Bargy Castle has been converted into a hotel. What's the last hotel you stayed in?
The Plaza Hotel in New York City.  We were upgraded to an elegant apartment suite by the lovely lady at the front desk who was a Jersey girl.  Those rooms are a few thousand a night.  La di da.. what a great experience that was.
6) Chris is a wine connoisseur who sold a collection of vintage reds for over $500,000. If you suddenly came into $500,000, what would you do with it?
Renovate my home.

7) In 1986, when this song was popular, singer/actress Lady Gaga was born in Manhattan. Have you been to New York City?
I have been to the city countless times... way too many to recall.   I grew up 25 minutes outside the city and that time was only because of traffic.

8) Also in 1986, NHL Hall of Famer Jacques Plante died.   Are you a hockey fan?
I think it's a great sport but I am not really a fan in the usual sense of the word.  I can take it or leave it.  Even though NJ has the Devil's, I have always liked the Rangers but I just don't get excited about sports at all nor do I follow them.

9) Random question – You just slid behind the wheel and are about to embark on a long road trip. Which of these famous Williams would you choose as your navigator: Willie Nelson, Bill Murray, or William, Prince of Wales?
Maybe Willie Nelson but, I really would pass on them all.   How about William Shatner?

Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

Saturday 9: Do You Know the Way to San Jose (1968)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.]

1) In this song, someone moves to Los Angeles looking for "fame and fortune" but ends up with a job "pumping gas." Today, the majority of service stations are self serve, so very few people pump gas for a living. Can you think of another job that used to be common but doesn't exist anymore?

Elevator operator is gone now.  Also switchboard operators.

Pumping your own gas in New Jersey is illegal for some very good reasons including fires and explosion and for women's safety.  Crimes on women are very common at gas stations,  It is nice to not have to leave your car to get gas especially in bad weather or at night.

2) The San Jose travel bureau advertises "300 days of sunshine" every year. How is the weather where you are today?

It was a lovely autumn day here, chilly and clear.

3) Lyricist Hal David became fond of San Jose when he was stationed there while in the Navy. Tell us about a place you visited that you have affection for.

I love Prince Edward Island, Canada and Mount Pocono in Pennsylvania.

4) Composer Burt Bacharach grew up and worked primarily in New York until his marriage to actress Angie Dickinson. She had to live in Los Angeles for her career, so he relocated and remained a Californian for the rest of his life. Where do you feel most at home? (It doesn't have to be a city. It could be your favorite chair.)

In my own home.

5) Dionne Warwick thinks this week's song is "dumb." She won her first Grammy for "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" and, decades later, still sings it in concert, but she has not changed her opinion of the song. What is something everyone else seems to like but you just don't get?

I suppose professional sports.

6) Now in her 80s, with more than 60 years in show business, Dionne still enjoys performing. She told a reporter that she loves looking out into the audience and seeing an arm go around a shoulder, or a couple begin holding hands, when they hear her sing "their song." What song reminds you of a special romance?

I don't have one.

 7) In 1968, when this song was popular, The Doris Day Show premiered. The show was, initially, a surprise to its star. Her manager/husband died suddenly without telling her he had committed her to a weekly sitcom. She was not pleased but honored the contract. Think of the last time you were surprised. Was it a happy or sad surprise?

A  happy surprise.. by family bought me a motorized mobility scooter!!!!

8) According to the Social Security Administration, the most popular baby names of 1968 were Lisa and Michael. Are there any Lisas or Michaels in your life?          No there are none in my life right now.

9) Random question: What are you looking forward to this week?

There is nothing special going on this week at all.

Saturday Mambo

It's  early Friday morning and rain is falling softly outside and I am dreaming of Prince Edward Island and how much I wish I was there..forever.  It would be my forever home if I could make it so.
Here is Saturday 9.

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you ato visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Mambo No. 5 (1999)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Lou Bega namechecks a lot of women in this song. Is there an Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monica, Erica, Tina, Mary, or Jessica in your life?              Yes to Pamela and Sandra.

2) Can you think of a song that includes your first name?       Annie's Song by John Denver, Ann by Bread, and Anne's Theme from the Anne of Green Gables program.

3) Lou sings that flirting is like a sport. Do you enjoy flirting?   It's not really my thing but I suppose I have in the past.

4) While Lou Bega's recording became a big hit worldwide, it enjoyed great popularity, where it was used during televised cricket matches. Do you know anything about the game of cricket?  Not really.

5) When Lou was riding high with "Mambo No. 5," Cher invited him to open for her on her 1999-2000 tour. Cher has more than 50 hit records, two television series, a Broadway show and an Oscar under her belt. Can you think of another performer who has succeeded in so many areas of entertainment?                 Barbra Streisand and many others too.

6) Lou turned 50 in April of this year. Are you soon celebrating a big birthday (one that ends in a 0 or 5)?         My birthday is 2 days before Thanksgiving this year and sometimes it falls on Thanksgiving but it's not a big one this year.

7) In 1999, when "Mambo No. 5" was on the radio, the movie American Pie premiered and was so popular it inspired three sequels. Have you seen any of the American Pie films?       No I haven't.

8) Also in 1999, Walmart opened its first store in the UK. Do you often shop at Walmart?    No.  I really don't like the store.  They don't clean it up and it attracts a lot of odd people sometimes.  Walmart also put a lot of small stores out of business.

9) Random question – Have you recently fallen asleep somewhere other than your bed? If yes, where did you doze off?                 I fall asleep at my desk sometimes.

Happy Weekend and   Chag Sukkot Sameach. As this holy day season is very busy, I will be around to visit blogs more in a few days.

Come See About Me.. Or not.

Hello

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Come See About Me (1964)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?    Hear it here.

1) In this song, Diana Ross sings that she's given up her friends for her boyfriend. Have you ever had a lover your friends disapproved of? Has a friend ever dated someone you didn't care for?
 Haha, frequently.

2) Without her man at her side she feels uncertain. Let's be more positive: what's something you're sure of?
There is a Creator who cares about his people.

3) When this song was popular, the Supremes were known for their elegant hair and wardrobe. When was the last time you got dressed up?
To go out to dinner I always dress up a bit and on holidays.

4) The Supremes went on to have a dozen #1 hits. This must have been hard for Betty McGlown, the fourth Supreme, who left the group before they recorded their first song. Can you think of an opportunity you missed?

5) After she left the Supremes, lead singer Diana Ross went on to have a successful solo career. But it hasn't always been easy. She stumbled in her high heels and broke her ankle as she left the stage after a November 2012 concert. Have you taken a tumble recently?
Yes.  My shower chair had a loose screw though I didn't realize it.  The leg collapsed inward and  the chair went over backwards with me in it. I hit my head on the wall behind me.

6) Ever the trooper, she honored her commitment to perform at a White House-sponsored Christmas concert just weeks later, even though her leg was still in a cast. Tell us about a time when you "played hurt."
Never played hurt.  It's foolish to play around with your health and safety,

7) In 1964, when this song was popular, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was born.    What was in your most recent Amazon shipment?
American flags for July 4

8) Also in 1964, women still routinely wore white gloves to complete a outfit. Short gloves that ended at the wrist were popular for everyday wear. What fashion trend do you wish would come back?
I'd like to see hats and more formality  for every occasion like it used to be.  Dressing has gone way downhill.

9) Random question: If you were in the witness protection program, what new name and occupation would you choose for yourself?
I think they choose it for you but my new name will be Puddin' Tain and if you ask me again I'll tell you the same.    As a job I will do what I've done already.. be a ghost writer who enjoy seeing her books in stores while no body knows who the real aurhor is!
Or even better, I will be the owner of the local greasy spoon!
Here are some other names you can use:
Dolores Dumbroad.................Marva Less
Belinda Butkiss.......................Dinah Mite
Babs Booty ............................Rose Bush
Dixie Lande........................... Lee Way
Penny Lane............................Mona Lotte
Zuchina Vegettta...................Inita Bath
 Jean Poole..........................

Nice to be Nice

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: It's So Nice to Be Nice  (to Your Neighbor) – 1947

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?         Hear it here.

1) In this song, Monica Lewis encourages us to greet our neighbors with a smile and a hello. Tell us about one of your neighbors.
One of my neighbors sons used to come to our house for breakfast every Sunday morning since I made pancakes , waffles or French toast on that day.   It was cute how he'd come around.
2) She reminds us that it's "nice to be nice." Who has recently shown you kindness?
My friends and family always show me kindness.

3) Monica Lewis was born in Chicago, where her mother performed with the Chicago Opera Company. Have you ever been to the opera?
Yes.  It's not far to go to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and it's great.

4) Her family moved to New York City, where she attended college by day and worked at radio station WMCA in the evenings to help support her family. Which do you listen to more: the radio or podcasts?
The radio.  I love radio and especially old radio shows that are still available to hear.
I remember WMCA very well and the personalities on the channel, especially Harry Harrison.
It was big along with WABC and WNEW.  W.. N..E ..W Eleven three O in New York.

5) In the 1940s she appeared all around New York – in nightclubs, on Broadway, and on radio shows. It was then that she got her best-known and longest-running role: the voice of Chiquita Banana. For decades she was heard singing the jingle, "I'm Chiquita Banana and I'm here to say ..." Do you have any bananas in your kitchen now?
No.  I like them a lot but they are too high in sugar.

6) Around 1950 she moved to Hollywood. She had recently divorced and wanted a fresh start. There shedated an actor who was also newly divorced: Ronald Reagan. Obviously she never had to ask, "Whatever became of him?" Who is the last former romance, classmate or coworker that you looked up on the internet?
 I haven't done that.
7) In 1947, when this song was popular, actor Ted Danson was born. He's best known as Sam Malone, the bartender at Cheers, "where everybody knows your name." Is there a bar or restaurant where you are recognized on sight?
There used to be but they moved to another town and that was the end of that.  It was nice knowing them like that.

8) The 1947 Studebaker Champion was one of the first cars to have an adjustable driver's seat designed to accommodate motorists of various heights. When you're driving someone else's car, do you usually adjust the seat?
Yes.  I have very short legs.

9) Random question: When someone takes advantage of you, are you angrier at them for doing it, or at yourself for letting it happen?
At them for betraying trust and using my kindness.

Rhythm of My Heart

A
sunny, warm summer Friday is always welcome though they are calling for thunderstorms later on and a bit of a rainy weekend.  Mostly we here on the edge of America rarely get the weather they predict for the inland areas, so we will see how things turn out.

It's 98.5°F at 4:00 in the afternoon here.   The heat of the sun felt so good on my always painful spine as stood on the porch feeding the fish.    Hot weather?  Bring it on baby!
No sooner did I publish this and it grew stormy dark and we are expecting a severe thunderstorm  sometime after 7PM.   Well.. as I said, maybe. You never know!

Here is this week's Saturday 9....

Saturday 9: Rhythm of My Heart (1991)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?     Hear it here.

1   Stewart sings that the words "I love you" roll off his tongue. When did you most recently say, "I love you?"
I say it everytime I see my children.

2   In "Rhythm of My Heart," he recalls running down the alley with his lady love. Does your neighborhood have alleys?
No.  My mother's hometown has alleys and you can park behind your house and go in the back door.  I love that.

3  Rod is well known for his coif. Are you having a good hair day today?
Usually, sure.

4   Rod was the youngest of 5. He remembers that, as a family, they enjoyed singing with Al Jolson records. Did your family have singalongs?
YES!!! Everyone played piano, everyone could sing and sing and play we did, especially when we had company over and they sang and played too!   Music is in our DNA!

5   He is proud of his luxury car collection, which includes a Rolls Royce, a Ferrari and the one rumored to be his favorite: a classic mid-70s Lamborghini Countach LP400 Periscopio. Looking back on years as a driver and a car owner, which vehicle is your all-time favorite?
A wonderfully comfortable and big Mistubishi Outlander.

6   Rod turned 80 this year and he's still touring.  Once known for his hard partying, he takes better care of himself now and rides a stationery bike every day.  What steps do you take to keep fit?
I try to move and exercise my legs as often as possible.   I eat a clean diet.  I have a small sit down bike.

7   In 1991, when this song was popular, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry died.  Do you have a favorite Star Trek character?
I did really like Spock.  Do you recall his hand sign?   You might be surprised to know that Leonard Nimoy   was using the sign the priests would display with both hands while blessing Israel:

"The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace"

I also liked Scotty a lot... "The engines gonna blow Captain. She canna take much more".   I really just liked them all.

8  Also in 1991, Seinfeld was a big deal on network television. Today the entire series is available to stream and on DVD. When you binge a show, are you more likely to pop in a disc or turn to a streaming service?
 Streaming.

9  Random question: Have you ever cared for a hamster or a gerbil? (Extra non-existent Saturday 9 points for its name.)
Yes one of the kids had a hamster.  I am not sure they ever named it.'The Little had a hedgehog named Squishy.

Today's Seaside photo:

 Have a wonderful weekend.

See You in Cuba

Saturday 9:

I Will See You in C-U-B-A (2010)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?         Hear it here.
Or you can hear the version by Ricky himself HERE

This song was chosen in honor of Father's Day.

1) In this week's song, Lucie Arnaz encourages us to hop a ship and join her in Cuba. Is your passport up to date?
No/
2) She sings that Cuba is a great place to enjoy wine and Panatelas. Do you like the smell of a good cigar?

No. Pipes can be nice sometimes but it's been years since I smelled that smoke.

3) Lucie said her Latin Roots CD represents "the rhythms of my soul" and is a tribute to her father, Desi Arnaz. Cuban-born Desi starred on Broadway and in nightclubs but was best known for co-starring in and producing the 1950s sitcom, I Love Lucy. When you think of I Love Lucy, what's the first thing that comes to mind?
I was not a fan really.

4) While Lucie's parents – Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball – are famous for their TV work, Tony-nominated Lucie has found her greatest success on the stage. She inherited their love of performing, saying, “My parents were always happiest when they were working.” What have you inherited from one or both your parents? (It could be anything from your work ethic to your eye color.)
I inherited my love of learning from my father.  My green eyes come from my grandfather.   I inherited music from my grandmother and singing from my great grandmother and great grandfather.

5) Though "Ricky Riccardo" often mangled English on I Love Lucy, Desi's English was very good. Lucille Ball admired his facility with languages and encouraged him to speak Spanish to their children so that they would be bilingual. When you were growing up, did your family speak any language other than English?
 Yes /

6) Desi Arnaz often performed "I Will See You in C-U-B-A." Is there a song that reminds you of your father?
Not that I can think of.   Maybe it could be Eddie Fischers  "Oh,
My Papa".

Here is another song about a father. Avinu Malkeinu meaning our Father, our King.

7) After Lucie's parents divorced, Lucille Ball remarried and Lucie got a stepfather, Gary Morton. Lucie appreciated how positive Gary always was about Desi. Decades later, when she married a man who already had children, Lucie said she better understood what a tough role stepparent can be. Did you have a stepparent? Are you a step parent?
I did not have a step parent.

8) As a single dad, Desi lived south of Los Angeles in Del Mar. Lucie and her brother, Desi Jr., spent school vacations there, going to the race track, bowling, and fishing with their dad. Share a happy memory from one of your school vacations (Christmas, Spring Break, or Summer).
One year we spent a lovely week in Wildwood Crest and Cape May.

9) Father's Day began in Washington state. In the early 1900s, Spokane resident Sonora Smart Dodd listened to her minister deliver a sermon celebrating Mother's Day and devoted herself to similarly honoring fathers. A century later, more money is still spent annually on Mother's Day. Why do you suppose that nationally we still make more of a fuss over Mother's Day than Father's Day?
Because many men are simply just not good fathers. Sorry, but the statistics are plain.  Many married women are actually single mothers because the fathers are just so uninterested in family.  It is a huge disgrace  really.

Georgia is not on my Mind at all..

What a terrible, no good, very bad day I had today (Friday).     I woke up sick as can be with spasms in my back from shoulder to waist, chills, aching muscles, headache.   Even my teeth were aching.    No, no flu and no cold.    Sometimes you can get  a build up of poisons in the body  from eating clean and exercising  and
then not drinking enough water to clean out the piosons.   Then sleeping wrong exacerabtates it making muscles wrench and ache badly.  My head hurt a lot.   A lot of self massage , plenty of water, face yoga all helped.  But it will take a while for this to right itself.
If we throw in the low baromter and the Schumann reasonance... boy oh boy what a wild ride.

Saturday 9: Georgia on My Mind (1978)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This lyrics refer to "an old sweet song." What old sweet song is a favorite of yours?
So many but here is one that means a lot since I live in a Summer Place, The Theme from A Summer Place.
The 2nd song is  an oldie from the 40s I think... There's a Chapter in my Life Called Mary..

2) Composer Hoagy Carmichael said he was inspired by saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer to write a song about Georgia. In those days, bands traveled by bus and Frankie enjoyed rolling through Georgia. Hoagy recalled that Frankie even volunteered the first two words, "Georgia, Georgia ..." If we were to organize a Saturday 9 bus trip, where would you recommend we go for lovely scenery?
There are so many places from Maine to California.  America is a beautiful place. Maine smells like pine.. the coast is spectacular.  Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts are glorious in autumn.  Pennsylvania farms are lovely in summer.   Missouri is a cool place... take your pick.

3) This version of "Georgia on My Mind" was controversial before it was even recorded. Willie Nelson's label, Columbia, didn't see the point of their outlaw country star singing an old standard that was associated with Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald. Willie had the last laugh. This record was a hit and Willie won a Grammy. Tell us about a time when you were a success despite opposition.
In high school, we lost a few friends. One passed on in middle school as the result of a life long illness.  Nothing fancy in schools back then and the boys would carry his wheelchair up the stairs from floor to floor for classes.  He was a great kid.    I thought it would be great to include him in the high school yearbook because he would have graduated with us had he lived.  I also knew it would do his parents hearts good to know he was not forgotten.
The rest of the yearbook committee did not want to include him and I had to fight for it but in the end I won and he was included.  When the book was published one of the girls who most opposed him being in  the yearbook quickly picked up a copy and ran to his parents to present them with a copy and take credit for something she had opposed.  It's okay, all I wanted was him in the yearbook and I got that accomplished.

4) While it's at odds with his "outlaw" image, Willie was a popular and active high school student. He played three sports and was a member of Future Farmers of America. What school activities did you participate in during your teen years?
Everything really. I was into everything: Acapella, girls athletic association,  clubs, editor in chief of the newspaper, managing editor of the radio, co editor of the yearbook, etc.
5) Willie once worked as a tree trimmer, so clearly he didn't suffer from acrophobia. How about you?   Do you have a fear of heights?
I am not fond of being high up much at all so I avoid heights.

6) He wrote the lyrics to one of his biggest hits, "On the Road Again," during a flight, using the airplane barf bag as scrap paper. That was back in 1980. In 2025, do you handwrite onto note paper, or do you make all your "notes to self" digitally?
I hand write notes.  I will lose them if they are dignital.  I don't use my computer or phone for things like that.

7) In 1978, when Willie was singing "Georgia on My Mind," audiences were flocking to see the movie Grease. What's your favorite song from Grease?
I don't have one and never bothered to see the movie.. just not my kind of thing.

8) Also in 1978, Karina Smirnoff was born. After spending her early years in the Ukraine, she came to America and found success on Dancing with the Stars. Are you a DWTS fan?
No.  I am not a fan of the show.

9) Random question: Do you ever carry a backpack?
No, I don't carry a backpack.  I have a hard enough time charrying a purse.  I don't like being bogged down too much.

Tomorrow is Sunday Stealing and Tuesday 4 goes up too.

Heart Like a Truck

Everywhere on the net I am seeing that  so many people are longing for the past.   1920s-50's style in dress and in music are very popular.  I've been listening to older music for many years.  It's relaxing and brain clearing I think.

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally
unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Heart Like a Truck (2022)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?   Hear it HERE.

1) In this week's song, Lainey Wilson longs to hit the open road.   What do you yearn for this morning?   It is Friday afternoon here.  I don't think I am yearning for much at all right now.  Maybe a nice dish of ice cream with whipped cream on top..

2) She says her heart runs on dreams and gasoline. What fuels you?   Love of life fuels me.

3) Lainey sings that her heart has been "drug through the mud." The correct past tense of "drag" is "dragged," but in parts of our country, "drug" is sometimes used. Can you think of any other grammatically incorrect song lyrics?
Songs with "we was", "we done"

4) She tells us her truck could benefit from being dusted off and shined up. Could your vehicle use a little TLC?                         Yup.  Needs a new battery and a good washing up.

5) Before making it big in country music, Lainey supported herself by doing odd jobs, including appearing as a Hannah Montana impersonator for kids' parties. What's the most unusual job you've held?
I guess as a medical technologist I have  worked with things you'd rather not know about .

6) In addition to singing, Lainey has acted, appearing in 5 episodes of the series Yellowstone. Are you a fan of the show?
I watched the first couple of episodes and found the characters totally unlikeable but I think the character of Beth intrigued me.

7) She loves Southern comfort food like mac and cheese and biscuits and gravy. What's on the menu at your place this weekend?
Dafina a Morrocan style beef stew.  Recipe HERE at my Rock & Roll Cafe.

8) In 2022, when this song was on the charts, Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Have you ever been to Scotland?
 No, not been there.

9) Random question – Let's pretend you're back in Kindergarten. Which of these would young you prefer: a toy kitchen set, kid-sized gardening tools, or a mini trampoline?
The toy kitchen or the gardening tools.

Don't forget to sign up for Tuesday 4.  Link is above.  I'd love to have you join in. Questions will be up Sunday evening.

It's supposed to rain a lot on Saturday. Since this is Thursday, I have no idea except for what the weatherman says and along the coast he is usually not on the money got out seaside area.
Thursday, as I was writing this, eas very windy though.

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. Saturday 9: Photograph (1973)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune?    Hear it here.

1) In this song, Ringo stumbles upon a photograph that reminds him of a lost love. Are there any photos displayed in the room you're in right now?    Yes. Photos of great grands, grands, parents, dog, sons and daughter.. Yup, there are photos in this room on one of the bookshelves.

2) While there are approximately 180 published songs credited to Lennon-McCartney, this is the only song written by Harrison-Starr. When you think of Ringo's old band, the Beatles, what's the first song that comes to mind?    "Michelle"

3) George and Ringo wrote this song while on a yacht in the South of France. They, and their wives, had just attended Mick Jagger's wedding to Bianca in Saint Tropez and decided to take a little holiday together. What are your vacation plans for 2025?
I don't have plans for a vacation.  I live in a vacation area anyway.   Years back a friend of mine went to the Bahamas.  I asked her how it was there.  She said, "It's New Jersey with a palm tree thrown in."

4) At 5'8, Ringo was the shortest Beatle and the only one with blue eyes. How tall are you? What's your eye color?
Last time my height was measured for my spinal exam I was a bit over 5'5".  My eyes are green.

5) Ringo gave his first wife, Maureen, a one-of-a-kind birthday gift.   Frank Sinatra recorded "The Lady Is a Tramp" with special lyrics, written just for her.   Do you have anything that's personalized? (It could be a monogram on a scarf, it doesn't have to be as cool as a gift from Frank Sinatra.)
I have a personalized hanging ornament and a key chain. A long while ago a friend made me a drawing personalized with  "Chana-Banana" written on it.

6) Ringo appeared as Mr. Conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine.   He recorded the narration for the entire first season in just a week. Tell us what you did last week.
The weather was stormy and windy.     I was home doing honey things and reading and drinking tea.

7) As a boy in Liverpool, Ringo loved watching American westerns.   Do you like cowboy movies/shows?
Yes.  I like to watch them on YouTube, and TV as re-runs.   I like the old TV shows and the old movies.

8) In 1973, when this song was a hit, former President Lyndon Johnson died. Who was President when you were a kid?
The president when I was old enough to know about such things was JFK

9) Random question: When you woke up this morning, did you know the day and date (before looking at your phone)?
Yes.     I don't stay close to my phone at all.   I usually keep the 5G and wifi turned off.   I hate how everyone  is addicted to their phone.   They answer it when at dinner, visiting someone, in a store, in the car.   Any place they happen to be the phone comes first.
Yes, its a real addiction and its not normal.
