Southside Irish

Roses  are red
Violets are bluish
everyone knows that
St Patrick was Jewish!
Strong evidence that Patrick was Sabbath observant as most Celts ar the time were exactly that and had been since around 35-40CE
Some very good articles on that are available in scholarly reference libraries.  From one of them:
"It's important to note that some early Celtics in Ireland and Scotland, where St. Patrick was active, did observe the Sabbath (Saturday) as a day of rest."   Interesting stuff.   Jewish presence in Ireland is small but ancient and Jewish people owned and worked in the tin mines from the ancient Bronze age onward in  Cornwall.

Welcome to Saturday: 9.
What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Southside Irish (1984)
Not familiar with this week's song?

Hear it here.

1. This week's song was chosen because it's something of an anthem in Chicagoland around St. Patrick's Day. Can you name another song that makes you think of St. Patrick's Day or Ireland?
"Ireland Mother Ireland" by  the great Irish tenor   Robert White  The song's a tear jerker.

2. The Irish Choir sings that the "craic" is always best among the Windy City Irish. "Craic" is Irish for "fun" and "high spirits." Are you planning anything fun this weekend?
Nothing planned.

Mount Ararat.. a volcano
3. They tell us that their fathers came over from Mayo, Cork and Donegal. Where did your ancestors hail from?
Mount Ararat by way of  the Garden of Eden and it' s environs.

4. The lyrics mention the rivalry between Chicago's two baseball teams. As Spring Training 2025 draws to a close, how do you feel about your baseball team's chances this season?
So what do I know??  Here's from the internet:  For 2025, PECOTA (whoever they are) sees the Yankees winning 89.7 games, the highest total of any American League team and the fourth-highest win total in baseball behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (103.8), Atlanta Braves (92.4), and Chicago Cubs (90.6).
5. The Chicago River is dyed green in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Does your community do anything to special for the holiday?
Yes, they raise the Irish flag at the Veteran's Park and drink themselves into a stupor.

6. While this week's song focuses on the Irish population of Chicago, it's not the U.S. city with the highest percentage of citizens of Irish ancestry. According to the 2020 census, Boston is #1. Have you ever been to Boston?
Yes. I like Boston and I like Massachusetts.

7. On Monday, which is St. Patrick's Day, do you plan to wear green?
Well, my eyes are green and that will do.

8. Clovers are a recognized symbol of St. Patrick's Day, and a four-leaf clover is believed to bring good luck. Have you ever seen a four-leaf clover?
Sure and Begorah I have seen a 4 leaf clover in me life. Now whadaya think of that?

9. Black coffee with whiskey and whipped cream is Irish Coffee. What's your standard coffee order?
Vanilla flavored coffee with heavy cream and/or non dairy creamer depending on when I am drinking it.

  1. Interesting thought that St. Patrick could be Jewish. Never would've thought that, but anything is possible! Yes, I will wear green on St. Patrick's day, although I am not really very much Irish...more English, German, and Scottish I found out than Irish. But it's a tradition to wear green or get pinched, so I will wear it for the fun of it. I don't drink coffee in any form...never developed a taste for it. So tea for me. I guess I could drink green tea for St. Patrick's Day! LOL. Have a lovely weekend.
