Were things in the USA were better in the past. Wages were fair, prices were low, money went further than it does today by a whole lot. Housing was affordable, apartment rent was reasonable and cars were as well.
Home prices in the 1960's averaged about $11,000 US for a 3 bedroom home.
The average apartment rent was $71.00 a month.
Phone was around $4 to $6 a month.
Prices didn't change much at all until the Carter administration when things took a giant leap.
Ground meat went from .25¢ to nearly a dollar a pound!
Anyone want to get into the time machine or are you happy with what today brings?
Every era has its problems but, prices mean a lot to quality of life for so many of us.
What do you think>
A complete room full of living room furniture could run you $600-$1000 dollars for high end furniture built to last.
I wonder how we would all do if we went back in time knowing what we know now!

Imagine buying a house at a reasonable price, only one spouse needing to work. With home prices at $11,000 one worker needed only two years of income to pay for it. I looked up on Grok and the average income for a family was $5,600 a year. Equivalent to $47,000 today. Where I live even ten years of salary would not buy a house, or even a door, ha ha.
ReplyDeleteThose were good days...but yes, the income was much less, yet still things were more affordable. I remember when we first got married in 1969, our rent was $100. a month, and we would put our money into different envelopes every payday, dividing up for rent, utilities, food, gas, misc., and even though our income was very low and hubby was still in college, we managed somehow. We didn't have anything extra, but we didn't starve either. Life was much simpler then.
ReplyDeleteI would gladly go back in itme.
ReplyDeletePerhaps what is missing today is actually something as simple as "context" . For those who are in their 30s and 40s have no memories of how it used to be...no "context" against which to measure the norms of today . There was a unity in neighborhoods , where everyone watched over all the children , to keep them safe . There was a generally shared set of morals and what made good character . Though not perfect , by a long shot , there was a sense of community that is harder to find now...folks separated from each other...few cohesive units . The contrast between the times is stark and a bit sad...the genuine concern and helpfulness of neighbors coming together to help someone in need seems replaced by suspicion , in many cases . Perhaps , the best that can be managed is a quiet , steadfast , daily concern for others and helping wherever we can ...just because .
