Saturday 9

Today I am joining with Saturday 9.

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every

Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Standing on the Corner (1956)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, four friends congregate on Main Street to look longingly at pretty girls. In your town, where is the best place for people watching?

I suppose the beach and the boardwalk are the best places to watch people.
The 'but' here is that I rarely watch people.   I hate when family or friends tell me to "look at that person over there."  Noooo.. and I won't look either.
So, now when you ask me to  "look" you will know what I am thinking about it. So.. don't ask.

2) This song was written for the Broadway musical, The Most Happy Fella. Who is the happiest person you know?

Over all, I  think I am.

3) The members of The Four Lads met at Toronto's St. Michael's Choir School. Growing up, did you attend parochial or public school?

Public school but with separate entrances for boys and girls and our neighboring town Elizabeth had separate boys and girls high schools.

4) The Four Lads always wore jackets and ties when they performed. Do you enjoying dressing up? Or would you rather keep it casual?

I like to dress up. I think people are far too casual today and it shows a profound turn toward the base and the profane that mark society today in America.
In Rome, everyone dresses nicely all the time.
People today even wear casual clothes to houses of worship. They make no distinction between the holy and the profane at all, something God commands.
If you were invited to see the Queen of England or to the White House you would surely dress up, right?  They why in the world would you show up before God in casual clothing? Where is your respect for His majesty? The Queen is a nothing compared to Him. And if you use disability as an excuse or comfort..come see me and we will talk about that.
I am tired of seeing people dressing down for every single thing they do.  It shows in the attitude too.How you dress reflects how you behave and your state of mind.
I see elderly people, who used to set the standard for nice dressing, dressed like bag people in restaurants etc.
What's up with that?  Physical comfort? Give me a break. You are talking to the wrong person about that.

5) While this song was a hit for The Four Lads, they were completely overshadowed in 1956 by Elvis Presley and "Heartbreak Hotel." Who do you think dominates today's music scene?

Today's music is dominated by junk.
E. Michael Jones speaks on that subject rather well. Notice that there are no great composers anymore and music has become more  profane and  more about mental programming than music.
Religious music has become nothing more than country western/rock/broadway style mantras intoned over and over again.  Once again, programming and not good programming either.
Sad state of affairs.
 6) The Wizard of Oz aired on TV for the first time in 1956. Sam was never crazy about those flying monkeys. Tell us about something that frightened you when you were a kid.

I was rarely frightened as a kid. Didn't like the blast of fireworks when I was 3 years old.
But I stood in the face of a tornado unafraid when I was left outside in an F4/5 that hit. I wasn't afraid.
I was bothered by mummies in the  4th grade after a school trip to the Metropolitan Museum in NYC but that only lasted one night and then I told myself to grow up and get over it and I did.

7) What scares you now?

 Not really sure.
I find how intelligence and morality has declined concerning but not frightening.

8) Since this week's song is about pretty girls: 1956's Miss America was Sharon Ritchie of Colorado. Today Colorado has the distinction of being the home of more microbreweries than any other state in the union. Which are you most particular about -- your beer, your wine, or your coffee?

How did you go from pretty girls to microbreweries?
I am particular about my Coffee Mate powdered creamer but not about coffee.
If there is no Coffee Mate Powdered Creamer, I don't really much like coffee at all.
I don't like alcoholic drinks or the effect they have on people.

9) Random question: We all have small, irritating habits, like soup slurping or not replacing the cap on the toothpaste. What's your nasty little habit?

I sometimes pick at my cuticles when nervous.

I have strong opinions and they are very firmly embedded , but, while my opinions are strong and immovable I do not judge others.
Since my opinion was asked, I tell how I really feel about things. In person I would not put my opinions out there unless you asked for them specifically.

I hope you will have a lovely weekend however you dress. whatever you drink or don't drink and whatever music you listen to.

  1. My grandfather started me on ppl watching when I was around 5 or so,he would take me to O'HARA airport and we would sit for hours, never to judge. He was always a good storyteller and perhaps that is where my vivid imagination comes from. Then again, I'm not sure he knew what to do with a little girl, he also use to take me to the horse track, that's another story, lol.

I enjoyed your answers, always a delight, my friend. Have a happy rest of the day, instead of studying and writing my paper, I've been goofing off...it's just to nice to stay in and concentrate. Smiles

    1. My grandfather got me started train watching. We went all the time up the street to the train station to watch them come in and go out.
I love trains to this day.

  2. I'm not a fan of the music these days either. Maybe I just don't get it.

  3. How did we get from pretty girls to microbreweries? Well, in 1956, when this song was popular, the winner of the Miss America was Sharon Ritchie of Colorado. Today, instead of being known as the home of a national beauty queen (the current Miss America is from North Dakota), Colorado is known for having more microbreweries than any other state in the union. Hope that clears it up, and thanks for playing Saturday 9! Hope to see you again next week.

  4. I appreciated your answers immensely. And you really had me wanting to wear a hat to church today...(from our FB conversation). I am thinking about it possibly for Mother's Day next week, but not sure yet. A friend in Ohio has promised to send me a new (vintage) hat that belonged to her grandmother. When I receive it I do believe I will wear it to church in honor of this dear woman on Mother's Day. I agree, we should dress to honor our God...and dress like the Proverbs 31 woman...I believe she honored God in all her ways. Thank you for these thoughts today. Music? I agree, it seems as though the beautiful classical and sacred music are from a whole different world...where are the inspired composers today? (I could quote an old joke here about finding Beethoven today in the basement writing music, and it was said that he was "decomposing"...just a little humor to lighten the mood!) I like watch people when we go to ballgames and airports. Of course I'd love to watch trains, if there were any to watch where we are. I love trains. My father collected Lionel trains and set up beautiful villages to run them through and entertained children young and old for many years with his displays. So sad that it is all gone now. Thank you for your thoughts. I always enjoy learning from you.

  5. Happy Tuesday Annie, I absolutely love this meme and your answers are spot on and mostly like mine would be. The Four Lads were one of my favorite groups and I still remember all the words to "Standing On The Corner". Have a blessed day ahead dear friend.
