Yes, I fit the bill. Do you?
"I come from a home where gravy is a beverage."
-- Erma Bombeck
The Girl Next Door is from a small town, a large family, or both. She still has a healthy dose of what people 'round these parts call "family values." She calls her grandparents every Sunday and she's got her mom on speed dial.
The Girl Next Door likes an uncomplicated life filled with the simple pleasures of family, home, kids, and food. She may not actually live on a farm, but she tends to keep a menagerie. Asked to choose between a dog and a cat, she generally won't. What's a good guard dog without a mouser to keep it company?
She is caring and warm, welcoming and friendly. Anybody in your office ever bring in chocolate chip cookies? You got yourself a Girl Next Door.
The defining characteristics of the Girl Next Door are simplicity and tradition. Simplicity means that, unlike the Academic Girl, she's really not that interested in the great questions that keep philosophers up at night. When she can sit in the kitchen, drinking coffee, eating shortbread cookies with a friend, and listening to the cat purr on top of the radiator, what else is there to life? What else, indeed.
She Might Be a Girl Next Door if:
- She drives: a good, solid American car -- Ford, Chevy , or Dodge.
- She can talk for more than ten minutes about: her family's holiday traditions.
- She begins her sentences with: "my mother says..."
- She'd never: go to a rave.
- She owns any of the following: scrapbooks, heirloom quilts, a Bible, family recipes, her grandmother's engagement ring.
Well I do indeed have my grandmothers engagement ring, a fiery little Opal surrounded by itty bitty seed pearls set in an 18K gold old fashioned setting.
My whole family lived in one small town close by one another for most of my growing up period. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc all lived in the same tiny town.
I do have quilts, many of them and find them something I truly love.
I own more than just "a" bible. I have a library full of religious and theological books.
I did love my grandmothers very much and lived with them and was raised by them. I spoke to my grandparents daily while they were alive.
I always had pets including cats and dogs and fish all at the same time.
Yes, I was the one to bring in home baked goods to my jobs.
Yes, I can ramble on about tradition and the scene at the kitchen table would be better if it was Cinnamon buns. I love sitting in kitchens with friends, family.
However, we part company when it says I am not into the great questions that keep philosophers up nights. I most assuredly am and the main focus of my interests in life are religion, science, history and philosophy, anthropology and archaeology.
Still, it is hard to find people to talk with on those things and everyday conversations for me isn't deep at all. Most people are just not interested in those things so I rarely speak about them to most. It's fine.
But, boy do I ever love an uncomplicated life full of love, hope and peace.
I don't like drama filled relationships, family or scenes. I am a peacemaker. There is no yelling or drama in my home. Never was growing up either.
The idea for this post, which I first posted years ago, was from a book promotion and I can't find it anymore.
What about you, are you the girl next door? How would you describe yourself? How would others describe you?
Let us know on your blog, won't you?
Based on your post, I am definitely a girl next door (and proud of it, too!). What better way is there to be? Good points!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Terri. Based on your post today, I am a girl next door and wouldn't it be fun to sit down together and talk of all these things? Love being all those things (except I don't have a cat nor do I have my grandma's engagement ring! Not sure she even had one!) I remember Roberta Shore in that pic. She was on Pinky Lee and The Virginian.
ReplyDeleteMy husband has actually said to me a few times, gravy is not a beverage!
DeleteI sure have all the qualifications, so I guess I am the girl next door, and I like it. I thought everybody knew gravy is a beverage. lol Great post, I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI drive a ZTW Ford wagon, lol...I guess I'm an American girl. Smiles
ReplyDeleteI come from a long maternal line of Girls Next Door...delivering love from the kitchen to those we care about . After I moved into this neighborhood , my elderly neighbors would laugh when I'd beg for help . They knew old habits had prevailed and there was a bounty of food prepared and their "help" was to share in it ! Somehow , handmade things , including food , are gifts from the heart .
ReplyDeletePossessions passed down from dear relatives are treasured...sadly , my children have no interest in these very special things . This generation seems hard-pressed to appreciate craftsmanship , things of timeless beauty , "old fashioned values" and the elderly among us .
Have a great day , my friend !
I consider myself a small town girl too. Never really have been comfortable with city life and prefer smaller towns. But more than that, I've always been more comfortable with the simpler things of life that seem to be slipping away. Today's technology throws me sometimes. I do like if for its efficiency and speed but I miss actual phone calls rather than emails and text messages. I miss hand written letters instead of emails. Birthday cards sent through the the mail instead of e-cards. Have a blessed day.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna say I'm a girl next door ... based on your answers. I have quilts that belonged to my precious Mamaw's that I cherish... and some antique furniture I got from their estates! Treasures! 💜
ReplyDeleteYes, I think I would qualify...I have my mother's engagement/wedding ring, and also my mother in law's ring. I have quilts from my husband's grandmother and from others...I love sitting at the table with friends over a cup of TEA (but coffee if you insist), eating some cookies or cake or pie or whatever we happen to have and just visiting and chatting about life in general, and love talking about our relationship with the Lord...just stay away from politics, please...I think we've all had enough of that subject, but I pray for our nation and leaders. I'm not particularly crafty, and my pets are the wild things outside...Please come on over and chat with me...I'd love it!!!!
