Back in the USA

Happy 4th of July friends!

Saturday 9, 1978 Back in the USA

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.
From the archives, with some tweaks

1) This song lists seven cities -- New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge and St. Louis -- that Linda just loves. How many have you visited?
New York City. that's it.  Not that fond of cities really.   As a kid I lived 25 minutes outside NYC by car with traffic.

2) The lyrics refer to hamburgers sizzling on the grill. What toppings do you believe make a perfect burger?
Ketchup, mustard, mushrooms, fake bacon bits, fresh tomato, pickle.

3) The original recording of this song by Chuck Berry has always been one of Linda Ronstadt's favorites, one she used to enjoy singing along with in the car. What's the most recent song you sang?
This song:

4) Linda performed The National Anthem at Game 3 of the 1977 World Series. The New York Yankees won both that game and the series. How is your baseball team doing this season?
I don't have a team that I follow, so not a question I can answer.

5) On the sleeve for this record, Linda was photographed on roller skates. Emergency rooms report a spike in wrist injuries, with people falling off skates and skateboards and jamming their wrists catching softballs. Have you recently been to the Emergency Room or Urgent Care?
No and I am very thankful for that.

6) It's July, so summer is in full swing. Bug bites are a big summer annoyance. Are you itching and scratching this morning?
Nope. Not many bugs out this year so far.

Since this is our last Saturday 9 before Independence Day, let's ask some questions related to the holiday.

6) The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence. What's the most recent printed media you have read (newspaper, magazine, newsletter, etc.)?
A newsletter from a chiropractic center. It always has interesting articles and good advice.

7) In high school, Sam was crazy about American history and got good grades. Science was her worst subject. In high school, where did you shine? In what subject were your grades not so hot?
I got A's in most subjects.

8) The first 4th of July parade each year is held at 12:01 AM in Gatlinberg, TN. Will you attend a parade or fireworks to celebrate the 4th?
I hope I will be seeing fireworks.  The beaches are loaded with them.   Since the  government banned 4th of July celebrations everyone has been setting off massive shows and parties all over the towns.    The first year the entire town was lit up with them proving patriots can't be stopped.

9) Americans love to celebrate our independence. In fact, there are more than 30 towns all across the US called Independence. There are two in MN alone (one outside Duluth, the other west of Minneapolis). Please google it and let us know: does your state have an Independence?

Yes, Independence  Township in Warren County, NJ.  It's off Rt 80, the  Christopher Columbus Hwy.   It has a road  called  "Shades of Death Rd.".   You can read about Shades of Death Road here.        The town is on the outskirts of the Jenny Jump State Forest in the Jenny Jump Mountain range.
The township was created in 1782.
Here are a few photos of the area:

Jenny Jump Mountains
According to legend, a young girl was picking berries when she was startled by a menacing Indian man.   Her father yelled out, Jenny, jump (presumably into his arms). Unfortunately, she fell to her death. To this day, many report seeing the spirit of a young girl wandering the area...looking for someone to catch her.

  1. Good Morning !
Always a delight to begin my day here !
That sea shanty is hard to forget , between the beat , the lyrics and Nathan Evans' voice...those were perilous times .
Thank you for these beautiful photos of Independence Township , NJ . To those whose image of New Jersey is limited to those of the refineries , it is the majority of the state that is GREEN and beautiful !
To all those who made our freedom and way of life possible in this country...
Thank you !!! Happy Fourth of July - Independence Day !!!

  2. I love your header. Nice that you don't have many bugs. We didn't get any insect bites up in Lake Tahoe or Mammoth. I guess they like our warm weather. That fall picture is really nice! Happy 4th!

  3. What gorgeous pics! We have very strict times for fireworks here but hopefully we'll see some here behind our pond. Our neighbors generally shoot them right at dark. Have a great one!
