Columbus Day is over but it will end with All Hallows Eve or Halloween.. the night before All Saint's Day when Christian martyrs are remembered and honored. All hallows eve really means, the night before the holy martyrs day but somehow it became associated with spooky happenings. Let's talk about the end of October.
1. Do you give out candy on Halloween to neighborhood kids? Did you ever.. have you always?
I give out candy when kids are around. Its always available but there were less kids last year as many have grown up around the neighborhood and no longer trick or treat. Churches also hold trunk and treats and the schools have them too.
2. We must dress up as this Halloween.. Yes, you have to ! What will your costume be this year?
I would dress up as a pirate complete with bandana, earrings and a parrot on my shoulder.
3. Have you ever carved pumpkins? Have you visited the gorgeous Hudson Valley in New York state?
Yes I have carved pumpkins as a kid. I have visited the Hudson Valley as well. It is really a beautiful place.
4. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving takes place in Sleepy Hollow a town known today as Tarrytown, NY. a lovely town in the Hudson Valley not far from the Catskill Mountains, site of Rip Van Winkle. The Hudson Valley is considered one of the most beautiful places in America. The Hudson separates NY from New Jersey Do you know the Legend of Sleepy Hollow? How about Rip Van Winkle? Do you believe either could be based on true stories as some believe? Why/ why not?
Things like headless horseman and Rip Van Winkle have some basis in reality though I have not looked into them to be able to know what truth might be there. Sometimes the truth is not in the physical happenings but in the moral of the story!
I don't think headless Hessian soldiers roam the Hudson Valley but, then again, who knows!
Boo!
Fun questions this week Annie and I enjoyed reading your answers. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered if there was a 'story' behind the legend of the headless horseman.
ReplyDeleteHi Annie! Fun post about Halloween. It's not my favorite holiday, my dad passed away on Halloween, which was also my mom and dad's wedding anniversary. I have had to work hard over the years to make it a fun day for my children and grands. We live in the country and don't get trick or treaters. My church does a trunk or treat, so that is what our neighborhood kids do. I would absolutely dress up like witch...a good witch, I just think that would be fun. Maybe, Glinda. The headless horseman always scared me! Have a wonderful rest of your week! Hugs, Barb
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the legends having some reality base. I have never heard about it. Thanks for sharing all of that. Loved your answer! Have a nice week.
