I joined the Brownies at age 7 with many of the girls in my elementary school class.
We had the most fun making sit-upons, glasses cases, learning American folk dances to old songs, learning how to do all sorts of wonderful projects and skills and the best part was friends and fellowship.
Then came the Girl Scouts and I was a scout until I earned my curved bar in Senior High School. It is equivilent to being an Eagle Scout for a boy but because we were girls they didn't make a big deal out of it.
In Scouts we learned to camp, to swim, to skate, first aid, embroidery, cooking, sewing, hiking, community service, gardening, animal care.. you name it we learned it.
I loved being in the Girl Scouts and am very proud that I was.
Girl Scouts of America was founded in 1912 and has a proud history.
Are there any other Girl Scout alumni out there?
Yes, I was a Brownie and a Girl Scout also, but I didn't make it as far as you did. Once I got into High School I got too busy with other extra-curricular activities, and so I gave up scouting. But before that I had learned so much, like you, earning many of the same badges. I still make the "Hobo Stew" that we learned to make while camping. I loved camping, canoeing, swimming and all the other activities. I remember also creating a floral arrangement in the county fair that I learned to make in Girl Scouts. I don't recall winning any ribbons, however. LOL. I am proud that I was a Girl Scout then and not now. A lot has changed over the years.
