Perhaps you will enjoy these quotes from her book "Emma" and possibly like to read it or watch one of the several film versions.
“Seldom, very seldom, does complete truth belong to any human disclosure; seldom can it happen that something is not a little disguised or a little mistaken.”
“I may have lost my heart, but not my self-control. ”
“I always deserve the best treatment because I never put up with any other.”
"I cannot make speeches, Emma," he soon resumed; and in a tone of such sincere, decided, intelligible tenderness as was tolerably convincing. "If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am. You hear nothing but truth from me. I have blamed you, and lectured you, and you have borne it as no other woman in England would have borne it. Bear with the truths I would tell you now, dearest Emma, as well as you have borne with them. The manner, perhaps, may have as little to recommend them. God knows, I have been a very indifferent lover. But you understand me. Yes, you see, you understand my feelings and will return them if you can. At present, I ask only to hear, once to hear your voice.”
― Jane Austen, Emma
You can find the book online at Project Gutenberg and read it for free.
Ah, this makes me want to read this book again. I know I have read it before, but it has been quite a while. I may have to put that on my next list of books to check out at the library. I love your little seagulls flying about. I wish I knew how you did that!
ReplyDeleteEasy to do and I can show you if you like :)
DeleteI've never been an Austen fan and that quote from (I'm presuming) the gentleman to Emma...makes me want to smack him upside the head. It seems to me that he is basically saying "you're wonderful, you put up with me, I stink and I am what I am and I'm not going to change." Blech! Maybe I'm taking it all out of context?
ReplyDeleteHey!!!! Don't tell anyone, but there are cool seagulls flying on your blog, smiles. Which I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
ReplyDeleteHi, I found your blog through someone else taking part in the Tuesday 4. It's nice to meet you. Your blog is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteEmma is my favorite of Jane Austen's novels. And, this summer, it is going to be performed at our local outdoor theatre. Am definitely going to that.
Blessings,

Always wonderful to visit here !
ReplyDeleteSo many things to learn and enjoy !
I do agree with Stacy about The Gentleman and his speech to Emma . Surely , it is too much to expect to be treated respectfully and appreciated for the complex and wonderful women we are ?!?!
Blech , indeed ! Looking forward to reading the book to see how it all turns out .
Be safe , warm and well , my friend
