Sultans of Swing

It's the weekend friends and time for Saturday 9 once again brought to you by Sam Winters.

Sultans of Swing (1978)

"Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!"

I really like this song and this band is pretty doggone good.

Unfamiliar with this week's song.   Hear it here.

1) The song begins by mentioning how it feels to shiver on a rainy night. As you answer these questions, is it chilly ... or rainy ... or dark?
It is dark out at 5:29PM Thursday evening and 29F.  The moon is trying to shine through some clouds covering it. By Friday rain will be here and Sat. morning will be cloudy and up in the 60's for Pete's sake.

2) The lyrics describe a bar at closing time, when the owner announces, "Goodnight, now, it's time to go home." Can you recall a time when you lingered until you closed the joint?
Yes, in a restaurant. having a great time. Even the crew of the place joined in. We had a great time after closing.

3) This song was written years before it was recorded, back in the days before Dire Straits was a success. Composer/lead singer/lead guitarist Mark Knopfler recalls that, when he was working on "Sultans of Swing," he was worried about paying his gas bill. Is anything troubling you this Saturday?

Yup. Quite a few things are on my mind. World is not nice right now...
But these change my attitude a bit:

And of course this makes me happy cuz it's home for me:

4) When this song was popular, Sam often played it on the jukebox because, well, who doesn't like Dire Straits? 40 years later, both that  jukebox and the bar it was in are gone. Have you recently been in a restaurant or bar that has a jukebox?
No, not recently sadly, but then people are not the same anymore and get offended by everything

5) In 1978, the year "Sultans of Swing" topped the charts, Garfield first appeared in newspapers all around the United States. Over the years, it was revealed that the cartoon cat loved lasagna and hated raisins. What's a food you love? What's one that you hate?

I like most everything but I wouldn't eat shellfish even if I could. Ugh.. gross.

6) One of People magazine's top-selling issues of 1978 featured Carrie Fisher and Darth Vader on the cover. The article
celebrated the theatrical re-release of Star Wars and announced that the cast was on board for a sequel. How many Star Wars movies have you seen?
I think I saw parts of the first one, maybe parts of another, but over all I just can't be bothered with it.
But in fact, it brings to mind another thought..and it's been a long while since my super popular (got 1000s of views)Hello Kitty
series...featuring  Hello Kitty as Kitty Vader.  I will have to re-run those posts.
But you can just as easily type  Hello Kitty into the search bar on the right sidebar of the blog and find all of them on one page .

7) The most popular movie of 1978 was Grease. What's your favorite song from the Grease soundtrack?

None of them. . Movies like that aren't my thing and I don't enjoy them at all.

8) In 1978, Yves St. Laurent made fashion news by putting his female runway models in menswear-inspired suits, complete with neckties and pocket
squares. Do you know how to tie a Windsor knot? Can you fold a handkerchief into a pocket square?

Yes, I can do both.

9) Random question: You're visiting a friend. He graciously offers you the use of his super-expensive, brand-new luxury sedan for the duration of your stay. Do you take him up on it? Or do you rent a car instead?

I'd rent rather than take that responsibility.

I leave you with this little truth:
In my never ending quest to endear myself to my mother, I spilled India ink on the rug.

See you tomorrow for Sunday Stealing.

  1. Our answers were rather different today, a bit unusual. I'm going to have to check out Kitty Vader when I have more time. You've made me curious! As for the quest to endear oneself to one's mother...ink in the carpet? Ugh. Bad choice. lol I can't remember doing anything that destructive, but once I decided to remedy the lack of maraschino cherries in the refrigerator by carrying a jar up from the basement. I succeeded in tripping on the basement stairs and falling on the jar, which broke and slit my wrist. Mom was not impressed. In my defense, I was only 4 or 5. Have a great Saturday, Annie! We're having rain and those balmy temps, too.

  5. It is crazy what people are offended by and what they are not. I hadn't even thought about the juke box songs being offensive, but yes.
The weather here is a mess. It was stormy last night in the 60's with tornado warnings and today they are calling for ice and snow and it is in the 20's. Goodness! Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend!

  6. My mother was normally very easygoing, but she completely FREAKED OUT whenever we spilled anything. Especially on her carpet. (Which was a really ugly gold shag monstrosity, very 1970s.)

  7. My daughter spilled nail polish remover on my coffee table....oh my, was I upset. Looking back...it was just a table. In the overall picture of life, not a big deal.
