You'll Never Know....

I am joining in for Saturday 9 again this week.

 Saturday 9: You'll Never Know (1943)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Haymes sings he must have reassured his girl "a million times or more." Does it frustrate you when you have to repeat yourself?
Sometimes, yes. It depends on the situation and I think its annoying when someone just isn't paying attention.

2) The lyrics were inspired by a poem written by a war bride to her soldier husband. Have you ever been in a long-distance romance?
Yes

3) This was the biggest hit of Dick Haymes, a popular singer in the 1940s. He got his big break when he replaced Frank Sinatra, who left the Tommy Dorsey Band to go onto bigger and better things. Are you a Frank Sinatra fan?
Both Dick Haymes and Frank Sinatra had wonderful voices but I think Haymes had a better voice over all for much longer. Sinatra's voice went downhill over the years. But, popularity in those industries is also a matter of some very ugly stuff.....

4) During the 1940s Dick Haymes toured with the Dorsey Band, made hit records, had his own radio show and appeared in nine movie musicals.  Yet by the early 1950s, he was broke. Part of it was that musical tastes changed, but more of it was that he enjoyed night life and high living too much. If you wanted to shave unnecessary expenses from your budget, where would you economize?
There isn't much I can economize at all. I buy only things I need to live. I am broke.
5) He blamed his money problems for his ongoing hypertension. How do you combat stress?
Peace and quiet work nicely.
6) Though he needed his voice to sing and suffered from high blood pressure, Haymes was a chain smoker. What bad habit would you like to quit?
I really don't have any real habits.

7) Though raised since early childhood in the US, Haymes was born in Buenos Aires to an Argentinian rancher and his Irish wife. This enabled Dick to claim Irish citizenship later in life. Have you ever lived abroad? If not, do you wish to?
I've never lived abroad and I really don't want to.

8) Dick Haymes never regained his popularity as a singer. After touring Europe for years, he returned to the United States in the late 1960s and tried his hand as a dramatic actor, playing small parts on popular cop shows like Adam 12, McMillan and  McCloud. If you had to support yourself as a performer, would you be more successful as a singer, a dancer, or an actor?
Actor I suppose.
9) Random Question: We're at the booth of a gypsy fortune teller. Would you be more embarrassed if she loudly and correctly guessed your age, or your weight?
No. It's all for fun anyway.

  2. Great answers. Yes, I believe Sinatra was highly promoted by who knows who/what...and there were better singers out there than him. But he served a purpose in that day and age. If I had to support myself at any of those vocations today, I'd be in trouble. I love to sing, but am not THAT good. I used to act in school plays and even in the community theater once, but I could never memorize all those lines today. And I've never been a good dancer. It's a good thing I am retired. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. It's hot and humid and hopefully going to rain here. We need it. I know you don't now.

  4. #7 - Yes, I completely agree. I don't want to live in any other Country than 'merica. Other than Israel, we're the only Country that is still "allowed" the God-given right to defend ourselves with personal weapons against criminals. No thank you.
Never have given much thought to entertainers of any kind. And it's common knowledge that there were criminal ties behind Frankie. I did enjoy his music, though. He always seemed so sad to me. Anyway, his connections were touched on in the film "Godfather" using a fictitious name, of course but we all knew who they were eluding too. *wink*
    Blessings. xx

  6. I completely agree with you on #1. I do not mind repeating if someone is trying to listen, but if they were just not paying attention...that is another thing. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.
