Hodgepodge for July 16

This Side of the Pond

A
Wednesday  is called "humpday" as many see it as a hump in the middle of the week.  They like getting over the hump and coasting down the other side to the weekend.
They say that Wednesday got it's name from the Norse god Woden.

All of the months and weekdays have those heathen origins. Only in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese do they use Sabbath for Saturday(Saturn's day).  Sabato comes from the Latin Sabbatum or 7th day of rest and Sabato in English is Sabbath.
Sunday(the day of the sun god) which is also a heathen term is Domingo in Portuguese and Spanish meaning Lord's Day and in Italian it is Domenica which comes from the Lain dominus or Lord.
I like this kind of deep dive into meanings.
This morning it is like Miami outside.  When I stayed with my mother  in law, a native of Miami, I remember the weather was  as humid as a sauna and that is how it is today. When I fed the fish this morning the air is thick and uncompromising.  No breeze at all . On a good note the pond is clean and crystal clear.

This Side of the Pond brings Wednesday Hodgepodge each weekHere are my answers.
1. What's a characteristic you admire in others? Elaborate. A lack of guile.  People with guile often manipulate others to get what they want. They always have an agenda. They are competitive and sly in getting what they want.

2. Do you have a favorite mug? Let's see it. Why is this one your favorite?
I use this Coleman insulated cup not because it's one I love but because it works.
I've had others but they don't do the job at all.   I want to keep my drink hot, hot, hot and the Coleman does that and is very slim and that's great because I have little hands.
I've had nother insulated cups but they don't work at all so I just don't use them.
Also, I dislike the turquoise color and it's very dented and beat up and I lost the top long ago so it's no good for taking somewhere with me
and its been about 8 or more years since I bought this cheaply at Home Goods.
I am looking for a new cup in a nicer color and I am looking into the Stanley cups.   I will probably order a new one today.

3. July 15th is/was National Give Something Away Day...will you (or did you, depending on what day you answer these questions) give something away? If so what? Do you regularly give away or do you tend to  'accumulate'?
I regulatrly give things away. I hate accumultaing things.  I remember packing my room up when I got married and I had very little.  Everything fit in 2 medium sized boxes.  That's how it should be.
If I don't use it/need it someone else probably does.   I recently gave away a lot of food and some brand new American flags.   My opinion is that if you haven't used it or seen it in a while you should get rid of it.  If you have more than one, get rid of one.
I have started life over again 3 times now and each time I lost everything.  I learned that none of it was important and was soon forgotten.  It's stuff.. it's not life.

4. You're planning a trip. Do you prefer exploring big cities or smaller, more off the grid towns? World Atlas lists these 12 'off the grid' towns to see in 2025. How many on the list have you seen? Of those listed which one would you most like to visit? Tell us why?
I like smaller places.
Boothbay Harbor Maine, Middlebury Vermont, New Hope Pennsylvania, Rehoboth Beach Delaware, Brevard North Carolina, Saugatuck Michigan, Medora North Dakota, Ouray Colorado, Lamoille Nevada, Neah Bay Washington, Hood River Oregon, or Cambria California
I am only an hour and a half from New Hope . Not bad for a little day trip..
I have not been to Boothbay Harbor in Maine and I would enjoy seeing that. I like Maine.

5. Have you ever...ridden a motorcycle? been to a Disney park? met a celebrity? won a contest? Tell us something about whatever you answered yes to on this list.
Never ridden a motorcycle and don't want to.
Never been to Disney and don't want to.
I met President Eisenhower who was a celebrity of sorts.  I've seen a few celebrities in person but didn't meet them.
I have won a few contests  in my life for running, writing, and other things.
Tell you more?Well, it was wonderful to meet President Eisenhower and I was a kid and he was retired and didn't live too much longer. He was so kind and gave me good advice.  He said that whatever you do in life be sure to have fun. Life without fun is just too hard.
My daughter collided with Robert Wagner at  Feinstein's at the Regnecy in NYC. She said he was very nice to  her.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Lately I am sick of hearing people say "you guys".   You go out to eat and the server says "what do you guys wan?"   Then there is the "how are you guys doing?"  Ugh.

Have a great day friends.    Ann

  1. When I moved south to go to college I discovered you guys is a very NJ/NY expression. I almost never hear it in the south. I've moved alot which I think helps one feel less attached to things. Only the most important, useful, and special are kept. Hope you have a great day!

  2. I like your turquoise colored cup, but I understand once they get dented and the lid doesn't fit, it's time to look for a new one. Oh, down here in the south they say "y'all" instead of "you guys". Regarding giving away stuff...I need to start giving things away, but no one wants most of what I have...OLD stuff/family heirlooms. In our last move to this house I did give away a lot of things to the people who were helping us pack and move. I try to weed out my closet periodically and donate clothes to the thrift store at our church. And I've been thinking about donating extra dishes that I don't use/need anymore to the thrift store also. We just don't do that much entertaining these days and when we do we often use paper plates, so why have so many dishes taking up space? Good question. I met Gloria Swanson on my 10th birthday and had my picture taken with her and it was in the newspaper. I really didn't know who she was, but all the old folks thought that was something great! LOL. Sorry I missed the Tuesday 4 yesterday. I was out of commission with vertigo. Trying to get back up and around today.

  4. I tend to look for folks who are without guile...genuine . It's worth the time taken , to find them . Boothbay Harbor , Maine was lovely...rode behind the driver of a motorcycle (0nly when they respected the road and took responsibility for the passenger's safety )...Disney was an expensive disappointment...met famous folks when working in a resort town ...

  5. Since we can't, and don't need to, take stuff with us when God calls us home, I'm happy to always give away useful items to those who can appreciate them. I don't want to burden our children with things that might have meant something to me, but won't to them. Starting life over three times??? Oh, my, Annie, what courage that takes! And courage, and all our strength, comes from God. Blessings!

  6. Here in the south I don't hear 'you guys' much, but we do say y'all. I think that word gets a lot of 'rolling eyes' from the north!!! It's just in my genes to say Y'all. Enjoyed reading all your answers, DDE was the first 'in the news' person I remember.
