The Wednesday Hodgepodge

Tonight , Tuesday, we are in the midst of a huge thunderstorm and the sea is roaring mad.  The lightning is non stop.  The weather suddenly turned hot and humid today too... ugly high humidity.  Its been so cool with chilly nights so we are spoiled.  Storm in the Atlantic are raging right now though.

1. What's something you wanted to do this summer that you never got around to doing?  Have a ton of barbeques with hot dogs, potato salad, Boston baked beans, salad, watermelon ... all the goodies.

 2. Were you the student who sat in the front row or hid in the back of the class? Our seats were assigned. You sat according to the teachers plan.
If you could go back and take one high school class again just for fun, which would it be?   Well if I go back and can not be disabled anymore I would take gym again for fun.  I loved it and was very athletic.

 3. What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher (this can be applied to anyone who teaches, not just classroom teachers)?
Patience , kindness and good humor.

 4. September 2nd is National Grits Day. Have you ever eaten grits?  Yes I have.

 Are you a fan?  Nppe!

If so how do you like yours?      I like them best if they are on someone else's menu but not mine.

Would people describe you as 'having grit'?  I guess so but you need to ask them.

 5. What's something you're never too old or too young to enjoy?     Having a good time and a good life.

 6. Insert your own random thought here.

I enjoyed living this kind of childhood life.     What about you?  Did you explore when you were a kid?

Enjoy your Wednesday....
Please consider taking part in our Tuesday 4..she said trying to drum up participation. The link is in the tabs above.

Hodgepodge

Welcome friends. This morning it is 57°F and lovely.   I wish I could share the coolness with those who are broiling right now.
I had done this post yesterday but it got deleted and I had to force myself to redo this again. Just not in the mood.

And now from Joyce at This Side of the Creek....

1. How do you feel about the transition from lazy summer days to a busier fall routine?
I like to be busy so it's not a problem for me at all.

2. Your favorite cookie?  There are a few.
Though I can't eat sweets anymore I used to like Snickerdoodles, Butter
Balls, and Toll House chocolate chips as long as they are made right.. thin and not cakey.

3. What's something you've learned from a culture different than your own?

I enjoy some recipes from other cultures.

4. Food critic, film critic, book critic, art critic...which hat would you most like to wear?      Tell us why.  Probably a food critic so I could get to sameple foods!!  But honestly I don;t have the knowledge or ability to critique anything much.

5. What's a small, random thing from your childhood that you still remember clearly?      Quite a lot. My memory goes way, way back.  I recall loving the creek behind our house where I would pick water cress for my mother and where there was a field of black eyed Susans.   I was kindergarten age but I would also keep the creek clean something I;ve loved doing all my life.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

A Hodgepodge

Good day friends and internet family.
It's Tuesday afternoon and I am so sleepy on this bright, sunny and chilly day on the coast.  I can smell the cedars and the salt air today and those are my favorite days of all.  On the coast the air is always clean and fresh and that does wonders except if you are as sleepy as I am this afternoon.. doggone it.
I am finishing this up late at night and its 39°F... my warm bed is waiting for me.
I am joining in for Wednesday Hodgepodge....

1. Besides Thanksgiving, something on your November calendar you're looking forward to?
It is my birthday and my youngest daughter's birthday.
Sometimes each of them can fall on Thanksgiving Day.
I don't celebrate birthdays but I always made a special meal and cake for kids. For myself, it's just another day.
In November, I look forward to the cold weather and the changing skies, the falling leaves and blustery winds.  I look forward to the early dark evenings.  I used to work catty-corner from my apartment and I loved the little walk home after work especially on rainy nights.  It was dark by 4:30.  Streets were wet and lit by passing cars and street lamps.  The leaves on the pavement glistened and  glowed in neon colors in the passing light.. Oh how I loved it.

2. Dictionary.com's word of the year is '6-7'. Huh?

Is it even a word??? I had to consult the internet to find out it's meaning because apparently I'm old and this particular slang is not part of my vocabulary. Is it part of yours?
Yes. Being at sixes and sevens has long been used and I've used it many times.
According to the article I read, it's a viral term, more of an inside joke with an unclear meaning driven by social media.
What do you think?  I think it's a good choice as all the world is at sixes and sevens with confusion and distrust, anger and everyone is so touchy and irritable lately.  So many feel at 6's and 7's as they struggle to find their way.

Dictionary. com says it's selection each year is a 'linguistic time capsule reflecting social trends and events, but they also admitted to being confused by '6-7'. Some say it means so-so and is sometimes accompanied by the up and down hand motion we associate with the phrase so-so.

What word do you think would have made a better choice?  I think this choice was pretty good and will work until the world realizes we have one enemy and only one and that is evil.
The world is at 6s and 7s but we don't have to be!

3. What's a food, trend, activity, or thing people love but you think is just so-so?
  Sushi.  No thank you.

4. Are you a tea drinker? I have been one for most of my life.

Hot or cold?  Both.  I like it hot and I like it cold with lemon ans good old cane sugar.
How do you like yours and at what time of day?  Anytime of day is fine. As a child my grandmother had tea ready for me when I came home and of course I had tea to start my school days as well.

Do you like flavored teas or teas billed as calming, energizing, healing, etc?  No. I do not like flavored teas and I am a purist. I like plain tea...Darjeeling, Ceylon, Orange Pekoe, Russian Caravan... I like those teas.

5. The November Hodgepodge has always included a weekly gratitude question. Here's the question for today-what are three things that make your heart sing?
  • The secmt of balsam and cedar in our woods  and the salty air.
  • Autumn
  • Homemade Apple Pie
6. Insert your own random thought here.
People are upset by the early darknes of Autumn and Winter.  These early times are set by God himself, not by us and they are set that way for a purpose.  The purposes of God are always for the ultimate good of mankind.   So, when you are about to complain about the early setting of the sun, remember that this is all part of Gods plan for you and that  we are to rejoice in it all.
From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same, the name of the Lord is worthy of praise.....Psalm 113

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hello!                It's Wednesday once again, a hump day as they say.
I am joining in for Wednesday Hodgepodge.

1. What gives you energy? What takes it away?
I get energy when I feel better.  Pain drains me completely sometimes.  I am having a real battle with it lately.

2. How often do you shop for clothes? What accessory do you always wear?
I haven't shopped for clothing in  several years.   I wear things until they just fall apart and that goes for shoes as well.
I wear no accessories at all most of the time.  I might put on something if I am going out.

3. What's something free that you feel grateful for?
Nature.
Hopefully it will remain free but I wouldn't count on it for much longer.

4. Breakfast, lunch, dinner...which meal of the day do you enjoy most? What's your go-to comfort food?
I like supper and potatoes are my number one comfort food.

5. This week the world remembers the tragic events of 9/11. Do you mark the day in any way? How do historical events shape your perspective on your personal challenges?
I recall how my mother enjoyed going with her friends to lunch at Windows on the World in the towers.
I don't mark the day except that I remember seeing the buildings smoking when we went for a drive up the NJ Parkway. I remember the people from my home town who died (my hometown  where I grew up  is what they call a bedroom town for NYC and is really only about  a 20 minute drive across the river and that's only because of traffic.  One of them worked for the Port Authority.
I a few counties away from there now.
I remember talking on the phone to a few friends who worked or studied in nearby buildings hearing their  description of what was happening.
I see what we've lost because of those those behind it who still have not paid for what was done and are getting bolder every day.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
I am enjoying the early Autumn weather here on the coast.   Humidity is very low, temperatures are chilly at night but moderate during the day.  Tonight it's raining lightly but small craft warnings are up and the sea is rough.

We've said goodbye to the tourists for this year  and the snowbirds are closing up their houses here to go back to their Florida homes.

If you've not joined in for Tuesday 4, please consider doing so. The link is at the top of my page and you can do it any day of the week.

Bye for now..............

A Hodgepodge

Wednesday is hump day.
Once you are over the hump you move seamlessly to Friday and the entrance to the weekend!
Here by the seaside the weather is warm, sunny and milld with a high of 75°F, humidity 65% and a low of 69°F.

From  This Side of the Pond.... Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. The midpoint of summer (believe it or not) is August 7th. Describe a perfect summer day. Have you had one this year?
I suppose the perfect day is a day where you are happy doing what you are doing.   The perfect day is one where you are enjoying life and people.
You can list things that would be nice but in the end it all depends on how you feel and the situation around you.   All of the things you like could be present but if there is a negative feeling or etc. it won't be a perfect day no matter where you are.

Still.. the boardwalk, a huge bucket of fresh french fries.
The bucket is really big by the way and the fries are cut and fried on the spot from real potatoes.
Or sitting by the bay with a cup of coffee.

2. What's one thing you wish you knew before starting high school?
That it would be some of the best days of my life.

3. What's something that bothers you if it's not done perfectly?
There are things that bother me but not because they are not done perfectly.  They bother me because they are not nice.

4. What's the most overrated food you're convinced people are just pretending to enjoy?
Maybe sushi.. though I think people really do like that.

What's a trendy food you actually do enjoy and would say is definitely not overrated?
I really enjoy deep fried hot dogs with mustard and sauerkraut and it is not overrated at all.

5. Wrapping it up this week with five fun this or thats...
  • personal stylist or personal chef?         Personal chef!
  • dance like nobody's watching or sing like nobody's listening?           Both.
  • unlimited tacos or free pizza?  Oh come on...that's just not fair.           I want both.
  • bookshelf organization-by size or by genre?             Both. By genre then arranged by size.
  • ten minutes late or ten minutes early?  10 late.   Bad form to be on the dot unless it's a meeting or service of some kind.  But to someone's home you arrive a bit after the appointed time, just not too late as that is rude.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I love the bay. It's been in my life since I was a baby.......

The Beach

Summer is the best isn't it?   I am enjoying life right now as never before because I made up my mind to  do just that and not to worry or complain about time and seasons any more.
This week's Hodgepodge is about the beach.  Here is my take on it.

1. When does time pass slowly for you? When does time past quickly for you?
Time passes slowly for me when I am waiting for something to come in the mail, etc.
Time passes quickly for me when the holidays come.  They are never long enough for my liking.

2. Do you have a favorite beach? What's your favorite 'beach' activity? Tell us what we'd find in your beach bag.

My favorite beach is right where I live.    We have beaches galore, some with boardwalks and natural beaches with no amusements

The first photo is the beach just across from me.  I live on the bay side.

In my beach bag is the number 1 essential for the beach :

Johnson's  Baby Powder.  This is  a MUST have for removing sand from your feet!  Just dust them with powder and the sand falls right off.

Then comes beach towel, fold up hat, tissues,  hair scrunchie, brush, money for food. That's it.  If I am on the island park.. I pack lunch or just go home to eat and come right back.

And here is the beach within walking distance of my home:

3. Your favorite book or movie with a beach setting?   A  favorite movie is A Summer Place and also Peyton Place. Both are set in Maine on the ocean.  There is also Summer of '42 which is a good beachy movie.

Where the Boys Are hardly shows much beach but it is good and finally  Blue Hawaii is very nice.

There is a book by Elin Hiderbrand  titled The Island and it's very good.  Elin Hilderbrands books all take place in or around Nantucket.

4. What's a food you love, but find it's a pain to eat? Is it worth it?

Tacos are a pain sometimes  because I overload them so much but it is very much worth it!

5.  Do you like roller coasters? What's the best (or worst) roller coaster you've been on?

No.  I don't and never would go on a roller coaster.  My parents didn't allow it and my mother made me promise to never get on one.. so I haven't.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Here is some plain truth.....

Hodgepodge for July 16

This Side of the Pond

A
Wednesday  is called "humpday" as many see it as a hump in the middle of the week.  They like getting over the hump and coasting down the other side to the weekend.
They say that Wednesday got it's name from the Norse god Woden.

All of the months and weekdays have those heathen origins. Only in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese do they use Sabbath for Saturday(Saturn's day).  Sabato comes from the Latin Sabbatum or 7th day of rest and Sabato in English is Sabbath.
Sunday(the day of the sun god) which is also a heathen term is Domingo in Portuguese and Spanish meaning Lord's Day and in Italian it is Domenica which comes from the Lain dominus or Lord.
I like this kind of deep dive into meanings.
This morning it is like Miami outside.  When I stayed with my mother  in law, a native of Miami, I remember the weather was  as humid as a sauna and that is how it is today. When I fed the fish this morning the air is thick and uncompromising.  No breeze at all . On a good note the pond is clean and crystal clear.

This Side of the Pond brings Wednesday Hodgepodge each weekHere are my answers.
1. What's a characteristic you admire in others? Elaborate. A lack of guile.  People with guile often manipulate others to get what they want. They always have an agenda. They are competitive and sly in getting what they want.

2. Do you have a favorite mug? Let's see it. Why is this one your favorite?
I use this Coleman insulated cup not because it's one I love but because it works.
I've had others but they don't do the job at all.   I want to keep my drink hot, hot, hot and the Coleman does that and is very slim and that's great because I have little hands.
I've had nother insulated cups but they don't work at all so I just don't use them.
Also, I dislike the turquoise color and it's very dented and beat up and I lost the top long ago so it's no good for taking somewhere with me
and its been about 8 or more years since I bought this cheaply at Home Goods.
I am looking for a new cup in a nicer color and I am looking into the Stanley cups.   I will probably order a new one today.

3. July 15th is/was National Give Something Away Day...will you (or did you, depending on what day you answer these questions) give something away? If so what? Do you regularly give away or do you tend to  'accumulate'?
I regulatrly give things away. I hate accumultaing things.  I remember packing my room up when I got married and I had very little.  Everything fit in 2 medium sized boxes.  That's how it should be.
If I don't use it/need it someone else probably does.   I recently gave away a lot of food and some brand new American flags.   My opinion is that if you haven't used it or seen it in a while you should get rid of it.  If you have more than one, get rid of one.
I have started life over again 3 times now and each time I lost everything.  I learned that none of it was important and was soon forgotten.  It's stuff.. it's not life.

4. You're planning a trip. Do you prefer exploring big cities or smaller, more off the grid towns? World Atlas lists these 12 'off the grid' towns to see in 2025. How many on the list have you seen? Of those listed which one would you most like to visit? Tell us why?
I like smaller places.
Boothbay Harbor Maine, Middlebury Vermont, New Hope Pennsylvania, Rehoboth Beach Delaware, Brevard North Carolina, Saugatuck Michigan, Medora North Dakota, Ouray Colorado, Lamoille Nevada, Neah Bay Washington, Hood River Oregon, or Cambria California
I am only an hour and a half from New Hope . Not bad for a little day trip..
I have not been to Boothbay Harbor in Maine and I would enjoy seeing that. I like Maine.

5. Have you ever...ridden a motorcycle? been to a Disney park? met a celebrity? won a contest? Tell us something about whatever you answered yes to on this list.
Never ridden a motorcycle and don't want to.
Never been to Disney and don't want to.
I met President Eisenhower who was a celebrity of sorts.  I've seen a few celebrities in person but didn't meet them.
I have won a few contests  in my life for running, writing, and other things.
Tell you more?Well, it was wonderful to meet President Eisenhower and I was a kid and he was retired and didn't live too much longer. He was so kind and gave me good advice.  He said that whatever you do in life be sure to have fun. Life without fun is just too hard.
My daughter collided with Robert Wagner at  Feinstein's at the Regnecy in NYC. She said he was very nice to  her.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
Lately I am sick of hearing people say "you guys".   You go out to eat and the server says "what do you guys wan?"   Then there is the "how are you guys doing?"  Ugh.

Have a great day friends.    Ann

A HodgePodge

 1. March 15th is known as The Ides of March, the date on which Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C....have you ever been to Rome? If so what did you love most about the city? If not, is this a place you'd like to visit?
My family have been to Rome many times.  I have never been.
The Little at the Vatican

2. 'Rome wasn't built in a day.' What project/activity/improvement (of any kind) do you have going on right now to which this saying might be applied?
My kitchen floor. It has to be completely torn up and replaced.

3. Let's do a little this or that with some Italian foods...

Caprese salad or Prosciutto with melon?  Caprese
Bruschetta or Antipasto?  Bruschetta
lasagne or ravioli?  Lasagna
bolognese or Carbonara? Bolognese
Risotto or gnocchi?  Risotto
tiramisu~gelato~cannoli?  Tiramisu

4. Of the colors red, white, and green which would I find most prevalent in your home?   White

Which one do you think is most flattering to you in terms of your wardrobe?
All of them.  I am a deep winter and jewel colors are my best colors.. lipstick red, emerald green, snow white, cobalt blue, royal purple.. things like that.

Have you ever had your colors done?  Yes.  Once as a teen and again as an adult

Is that something you'd be interested in doing?  I've done it already.

5. Life would be boring without....        Nature

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Here is Julius Caesar (Yulius Kaiser) done as he would look today.. He looks very English actually.
We now know that the C in Latin is pronounced like a hard K.. so the Germans got it right.  It is Kaiser not sea-zer.
He looks like he should be the new James Bond I think.
Beware the Ides of March Caesar!!  But if you fear the 15th of March be aware that the calendar today is not the same as the old Julian calendar.  For some stupid reason we changed to the Gregorian calendar.
Julius was murdered on the Ides of March in 44 BC.     He had light brown or sandy hair and wine colored eyes.. meaning deep sapphire blue.     Yes, there is such a thing as blue wine.
His family were the gens Julii (You-lee-eye) a high ranked prestigious clan  descended from   Aeaneas the Trojan hero.

Gaius  Julius Caesar 100BC- 44BC

Blue Wine

You might like to know that Noah himself planted the grapes in Italy.  He resided in Genoa (Ge-Noah)
and there are the original grapes just as originally created.

Welcome March

A  big happy Wednesday hello to you my friends!
Here on the extreme east coast we are expecting a severe storm line that seems to be in the south and working it's way here. steady as she goes.
 .
From this Side of the Pond

Here is Wednesday's Hodgepodge........................

1  What do you love most about March?

The woods in winter
I like that March is wild and windy.   Last night I could hear the wind whistling through the woods behind me.   It was just wonderful to hear.

2. Hey! Did you know March is National Celery Month? Do you like celery? What's something you make (or like to order out) that calls for celery?

No, I did not know it was national celery month!   I use celery in almost every meat dish I make.  I also cut up big stalks into bite size peices to eat as a snack.  Celery lowers blood pressure espcially if you also eat beets.  Celery softens the veins and arteries preventing hardening of the arteries.  It is also a natural diuretic and excellent source of fiber.

3. _______________ is the soundtrack to my life right now.  The soundtrack  of my life right now is the sound of wind, the silence of the afternoons when everyone is at work and kids are in school, the song of birds returning from the south, the sound of the Little bringing in the trash wheelie bin, my mail and her "Hi, can we watch some Teen Wolf"?

4. Share a favorite motivational quote for overcoming challenges.  "Get over yourself and move along"

5. The Hodgepodge lands on Ash Wednesday this year. Do you participate in Lent in some way? If so tell us more.    No.

6. Insert your own random thought here:

This is a photo of my daughter and her grandma taken the last time they got together in Salt Lake and after visiting the Salt Lake Temple which you can see in the background..  My daughter was born in Salt Lake City and we lived there a long time.   Grandma passed away after this wss taken and I didn't get to see her then.

It's funny to see my daughter with short hair. She had just cut it back then but now its very long once again.     Mom was so tiny.    My daughter is only 5'1" and you can see how tiny Grandma is!   I wish I had been able to go too but it wasn't possible. My daughter got to visit her 10 aunts and uncles and her 60 cousins.   Big family my friends...    I miss Salt Lake, I miss Mom.

Lovely Hodgepodge

Last n ight we had about 6 inches of snow or so.  Very heavy snow and very pretty.  Today the skies are silvery and beautiful , wind is quiet and life is good.    We are due for rain tomorrow and as I stick my nose out the backdoor I can see the snow is going to melt a bit.
There was no meatloaf last night because I forgot to take out the ground meat.  So I made a big omelet for dinner.

Let's try some Wednesday Hodgepodge... because it's Wednesday after all.

1. Did you watch the Super Bowl? Did your team win?
Yes, I did watch the Super Bowl and  the Eagles won.  I live close to Philadelphia so the Eagles would be the team I support.  FLY EAGLES FLY!
What's your favorite game day snack for  whatever sport is happening?  Blue tortilla chips and salsa mixed with cheeses and sour cream as a warm dip.

2. What's your 'superpower
My memory maybe? Someone else needs to answer that for me really.

3. Will you do anything special on Valentine's Day?   No, nothing special.
If so do share. Any thoughts on/about this particular holiday?   It is a memorial day for a real man named St. Valentine.
Share a favorite verse or quote relating to love.  My own quote is that love is a verb.  It is something you do, not just something you feel.

None of the men in my life, including my late husband did anything for any holiday let alone Valentine's Day.       My father, on the other hand.. brought home big heart shaped fancy boxes of candy

for me, my mother, my grandmothers and gave us gifts.  He was a very romantic gentlemen.
He passed away on February 3rd in 1985  .  I wrote the story of the Valentine boxes called  Love in a Candy Box.     It's short so perhaps you might like to read it.

4. Are you a fan of the rom-com genre?     I am a fan of the Hallmark romance movies, yes.
If so what's one of your favorites?   Not Hallmnark.. but,  While you Were Sleeping, You've Got Mail.
If you're not a movie go-er then what about a book you love that features a great love story?  Perhaps one of Jane Austen's books.
How about a favorite love song?
And here is a favorite love song about the man I've never met.  He is perfect beause I've created him.

5. Let's get creative...write an acrostic using the word L-O-V-E.
I don't want to.  The word speaks for itself anyway.    😜

6. Insert your own random thought here.

This is Julius Caesar  (we now know the correct pronunciation is Kaiser not sea-zer)  The 'C' sound in Latin was a hard K sound.  His name would be said like this: Yulius Kaiser.        He looks like a typical Englishman.

Here is the first US president to be born a US Citizen.. Martin Van Buren who spoke Dutch at home since his parents came from the Netherlands to help build a nation.  He was born in Kinderhook, New York.
President from 1837-1841 he was an enemy of slavery and fought hard to end it. Born in 1782, he was unpopular with his own policial party, the Democrats, because of his opposition to slavery. The Democrat party was so angry at his hatred of slavey they refused to renominate him for a second term.
In those days you had the Whig Party and the Democrat Party.    I would have opted for the Birthday Party myself.

 Now go behave yourself today....

Hodgepodge

W
ednesday by the sea:           Yesterday was very windy.    I am a great fan of windy, blustery days in autumn and winter but not so much in spring and summer the reason being I can wear a hat, scarf and a coat to hold myself  together in the colder months but in summer everything flies off and gets discombobulated and I just don't care much for that.  But in Autumn and Winter I love the sound of wind barging it's way through the woods behind me.  I like when the bay is whipped up into a frenzy by the wind.
Blogger tip:  If your background repeats over and over and you'd like it to fill the page, hit the scroll or don't scroll to make it fit your page properly.  Its in the same area that uploads your background.  If you have color beside your header that you don't want, it is possible to also change the background color.
I am joining in with Wednesday Hodgepodge....

1. What was your after school routine like when you were a kid?
After school in Kindergarten when I was doing afternoon session, I went home to my grandmother who had  tea ready.  We would sit at the kitchen table and eat our meal together.  It was so special to me.
After she passed, my other grandmother came to care for me. Then I would come home and have tea with her, then watch some cartoons or go outside and play with friends until time for supper. I always had my dance classes and Brownies or Girl Scouts  from Brownie to curved bar.
As a teen I had so many after school projects, sports and newspaper, radio station, singing lessons one day and 2 days of dance class.   I was busy, busy and I loved it.    Those were the best days of my life.

2. January 26 is National Green Juice Day ( I guess it's true everything really does have it's day). Do you juice, as in make your own in an attempt to get healthy? Do you do the green juices? What's your favorite kind of juice (home blended or store bought, either one)?

I made juices but realized quickly it was a waste of food.       I used to love grape juice but I can't  have grapes anymore.

3. What's something trivial about which you have a strong opinion?   Well, if I have a strong opinion then it's not trivial.   At least not to me i t isn't.

4. What do you need more of in your life?
