Sunday Stealing

I'm participating in Sunday Stealing, always a noble endeavor!

"Hi! I'm your host Bev Sykes of the blog "Funny the World". . Welcome to Sunday Stealing. This feature originated and published on WTIT: The Blog. Here we will steal all types of questions from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent questions. Cheers to all of us thieves!

Excerpted from Live Journal 5000 Questions
1. Who is the hottest celebrity you can think of?
None of them. I am not a Hollywood fan. People are attractive to me because of their personalities. Hollywood people seem so empty and fake.

2. Do you ever get so nervous that you can't even think?
Not that nervous no.

3. Do you sing when there is no music?
Yes, I do that a lot.

4.Who was the best political leader in history and why?
In all of history? Has there ever been one? I truly doubt it. Even King Solomon had his faults.
I think John F. Kennedy would have been great given a chance.
Most world leaders were and are pretty ugly actually and corrupt.

5 If you could dance with anyone in the world right now, who would it be and what song would you dance to?
Kenny Wormald  to Give Me a Fake ID from the newer version of Footloose.
I dance at least as good as Julianne Hough who dances with him in this bit from the movie..  Piece of cake.
Here it is from rehearsals:

6 Finish this sentence your own way. There are two types of people in the world...  Those who are Irish and those who wish they were.

7 What have you saved since elementary school?
Nothing I can think of but I have my Teddy who was given to me at age 3

8 Have you ever won an award?
Yes, I've won a few for running track and dancing.

9. Do you feel more connected to the sun or the moon?
Neither. I feel connected more to people and animals than inanimate objects.

10 Do flaws make people interesting to you?
Not that I can think of, no.  I find better qualities more interesting in them.

11 Who is your favorite historical figure?
I don't believe I have a favorite.

12. White bread or wheat bread?
White breads like real Semolina Italian or a good French bread, or sour dough.

13. Do you usually do things fast or right?
You can do both you know.

14. Are you or have you ever been in a band?
No I was not.

15. Here are 4 statements about me. Only one of them is true. Which one is it?
     1. I danced professionally.
     2. I have a degree in mathmatics from Rutgers University.
    3. I am a card carrying member of a political party.
    4. I drive a little tiny Volkswagen
I will post the right one at the end.. but tell me which one you thought it was, okay?

16. Would you wear a thong bathing suit in public?
Not sure about the thong but bikini, yes of course.

17. Have you thought about death today?
Well I have since you brought it up.

18. What is your favorite breakfast?
Fried eggs with fried tomato and mushrooms with waffles or pancakes on the side.

19. Are you the life of the party?
No. I think that can be a bit rude to gain all that attention on yourself.

20. If you hit an animal with your car would you get out to try and make sure it was okay?
Yes, of course if possible.
21. When do you get your most peaceful and satisfying sleep?
At night.
22. What thought gets you out of bed in the morning?
Time to wake up! pretty simple isn't it?
23. What are you a member of?
The Human Race
24. Name one place you refuse to ever go.
I don't know of any place I absolutely refuse to go. There are some I have no interest in visiting.

25. When (and if) people (or animals) go to heaven, do they become angels?
Nope. They do not.  Angels were created as angels. You can't become one any more than you can become an animal.

Of the four statements number 1 is true. Though I did study at Rutgers, it wasn't math, I never drove a tiny Volkswagen and I am not a member of either political party.
Hey.. don't forget Tuesday 4 goes up on Sunday Night!!

Buttered Popcorn...

Howdy friends!
It's day number 7  again and time to play with questions.

From Sam: "Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!"

Saturday 9: Buttered Popcorn (1961)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
 1) This Saturday, the treat's on Sam. Will you have buttered popcorn, caramel corn or cheese popcorn?
I like buttered popcorn with Brewer's Yeast on it.

2) This record represents the Supremes as they are seldom heard. Florence Ballard is singing lead, with background vocals provided by Mary Wilson, Barbara Martin and Diane Ross. That's right, "Diane." Her parents meant for her to be named "Diane," and that's what old friends and family still call her, but the hospital mistakenly put her name down as "Diana." Motown execs thought "Diana Ross" had a better sound and the rest, as they say, is history. Do you often make typos? Or are you careful and precise at the keyboard?
Sometimes, of course.
3) Barbara Martin left the Supremes in 1962, before they reached stardom, because she was a new mom and wanted to stay home with her baby. Have you ever found yourself in the difficult position of having to choose between your personal and professional lives?
Sure, but I put the personal first always, even to my own detriment actually. I walked out on a job to get to my kids.
4) Florence Ballard's cousin, Hank, wrote the famous Chubby Checkers dance record, "The Twist." When did you last get on your feet and dance?
I try to dance every day at least a bit. I danced for many years and its something you never get out of your blood. Even when I was in a wheelchair, I danced and moved my feet.
5) Mary Wilson stayed with the group until it disbanded in 1977. She has said that one of her most memorable moments came in 1968, when the group performed for Princess Margaret. Mary recalled that the Princess loudly asked if Mary's hair was real or a wig. Mary was shocked, expecting better behavior from a royal. Tell us a time when someone's behavior shocked you.
Its happened a few times. It's usually friends who do it.
I'd have answered Margaret  this way.  "Why is that of concern to you Margie are you self conscious about your own hair and need a leg up on someone else?  By the way, have you sobered up from your latest booze and sex orgy? Still playing the family tart? What's your opinion  on your sister  having married  a nazi sympathizer whose sisters all married former SS men? Hmmm.. Tell us Margie. "
Here is a quote about Margaret one of her friends in an article in Biography:
"Over the decades of her turbulent life, Margaret would go from belle of the ball to persona non grata, her bossy, difficult snappishness making even the most accomplished society hostess quake in her heels. “I have been at the same house parties as her and her arrogance, her petulance, her rudeness and her plain bad manners were awful...”
The articles goes on, "
Always clever, Margaret discovered perhaps her best party trick early on. She used royal protocol and its archaic rules to suit her whims and desires. At a party given in her honor in Paris in 1959, she took advantage of the long-standing rule that dinner could not begin until she arrived.
“Dinner was at 8:30 and at 8:30 Princess Margaret’s hairdresser arrived, so we waited for hours while he concocted a ghastly coiffure,” writer and aristocrat Nancy Mitford recalled. “She looked like a huge ball of fur on two well-developed legs.” The next day her bad behavior continued when she begged off a planned excursion, claiming a cold, only to spend the day in fittings with the House of Dior."

6) In 1961, when this song was released, the TV show Hazel premiered and was a top 5 hit for NBC. Oscar winner Shirley Booth played the title character, a very capable and lovable maid. If Crazy Sam could have a maid for just a few hours today, she'd love to have her refrigerator cleaned and kitchen cabinets organized. If you could have a pair of helping hands around your house this afternoon, what would you ask the maid to do?
 This maid better work for free unless she is Irish in which case I will pay her triple the going rate;
I needed someone to take down drapes for me to wash. I got it done , they are washed, now

waiting to go back up.  I wash curtains and drapes every few months.
Yesterday I also washed my 8 X 10 dining room carpet outside with a scrub brush and detergent, hosed it off and hung on the fence, then put it on the lawn to dry. Came out nicely.
I could have used more help with that for sure.
I'd have the maid wash my kitchen cabinets, my floors and the windows outside and inside. She can then get her butt up in the attic and straighten it all out. Oh and she can paint the bedrooms and mow the lawn too.  Front door needs repainting, my roof needs fixing and I need new floors throughout. Lazy girl better get moving , I want it done today.

7) Also in 1961, President John F. Kennedy appeared on the cover of Time as their Man of the Year. Are there any magazines in your home right now? If so, who is on the cover?
Yes. I have some old Seventeen Magazines from the 60s and a Redbook from 1960 that were my mother's.  I have no idea who is on the covers.
JFK would not be popular with today's crowd. He is with me though.
8) Ernest Hemingway died in 1961. Have you read any of his works?
Old Man and the Sea etc. Not a Hemingway fan.
9) Random question: How many pancakes are in the perfect stack?
Any where from 4 to infinity,  I like pancakes made with club soda since it makes them extremely fluffy and light. Real buttermilk is nice in them too.

Recipe: Use any brand of pancake mix you like but replace the milk or water with club soda.
This makes them so fluffy you will hit yourself in the head with a  brick for not knowing about this sooner.  You can use this substitution with a box mix or your own homemade mix.

End of the Week... End of August

August seems to have gone by very quickly.
And summer has as well.  We have only 25 days until the Autumnal Equinox changes the season  again.
I enjoy photos of autumn best of all and I think it is because I love the colder weather and I adore brilliant colors.  Here is the northeast the colors of autumn are jewel like and vivid.
Summer is green, white, blue and yellow. Spring is white, pale green and pinks.  Winter is deep browns, silvers, white and gold.  Every season has it's own type of magical beauty to share and show off.

“Autumn seemed to arrive suddenly that year. The morning of the first September was crisp and golden as an apple.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I pray it arrives just as suddenly this  year.
But first.. a look at the bay in summer...

A Tuesday 4...

Soda Pop!

Welcome to Tuesday 4 which was started by our friend Toni Taddeo and kept up in memory of her.
Different sections of the USA have different words and customs they use. Let's talk about
them.

1. In New Jersey you put your groceries in a paper bag or plastic bag.  In Athens, Ohio where I went to university, you put them in a paper sack.
Is it bag , sack or something else where you live?
Here in New Jersey it is a paper bag or a plastic bag.

2. NJ says  Stockings.Athens,  Ohio used to call them "hose" and in Britain they are tights. What about where you live?
Well the answer, of course, is in the question. I am in New Jersey so it is stockings and also pantyhose.

3.Soda, Pop, Coke?
Here in NJ we call carbonated drinks soda.

4. Shopping cart or trolley or? What do you call it?
We call it a shopping cart.

This one was a bit odd for me since I wrote the questions based on my own state and that made my answers pretty uninteresting I think.
When I lived in Utah, everyone called all carbonated drinks "coke" and when I was living in Ohio, a soda meant an ice cream soda. They called carbonated drinks "pop".
People congregate with their own for the most part and so we get those regional differences not just in the USA but in other nations as well.
You may have noticed that in Britain they will wish you a Happy Christmas while here in the US it's Merry Christmas. This is because America was established during the Shakespearean era when words like Merry and  platter were common.   Britain moved on with it's English but we did to a much lesser extent. So, we use the word merry and we still use the word platter for a serving dish while in England the word has fallen mostly into disuse.  Interesting no?

Can you believe that August, which began only yesterday of course, is almost gone? It is nearly September. Time to break out my autumn header paintings.
I can't wait for Halloween , Thanksgiving and I am praying for very chilly autumn weather with lots of color in the leaves.  What about you?
To me, autumn/fall is the loveliest, most colorful season along with the Chanukah/Christmas season with its candles and lights that are so warm, merry (there's that word again) and inviting!
Sigh...Google insists that it is Hanukah.. but no. It begins with a chet, a hard gutteral  clearing the back of the throat  sound and the H is deceptive. It is CHanukah the ch sound being like the Scottish loch.  Trust me Google I read Hebrew and you don't!  Spell check is a pain at times.

Reminder to Self...

T   he Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble" ―Psalms

I made this as a reminder to myself for Thursday

Tuesday 4

A Matter of Time

Welcome to Tuesday 4, a collection of 4 questions each week. It is kept up in honor and memory of our dear friend Toni Taddeo, the founder of the meme.

Let's discuss time!
1. Are meals eaten at certain times in your home or are they more spontaneous?
When my family was around they were at specific times but now, alone, I eat when hungry.
2. If you attend religious services or club meetings, are they morning, afternoon or evening? Are there advantages/disadvantages to that time?
Religious services are in the morning. I don't like doing formal things in the morning.
3.Are you in bed and up in the mornings at a regular time each day?
No, my days are no longer regular. I would like to make them regular again but it's not always possible.
4.Do you set apart specific times during the day or week to do certain things like study, shopping, laundry, visiting?
For me, its not possible as spinal pain gets in the way. My plans are subject to change at the drop of a hat.
Isn't the rabbit cute? I found him online and put the words from Alice in Wonderland on the banner. I just think he is so adorable.
Do you remember the song from the movie?

On a Monday

Monday is cool, a bit breezy and low in humidity. Just about perfect.
A perfect summer in New Jersey this year. Not too hot, not too cold, breezes daily. Just a lot of thunderstorms this year and a small hurricane came to visit.
Autumn is just around the corner waiting to make her dramatic entrance.

If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139

CSI

Welcome friends to another Saturday 9.
As I have said before we here in NJ are getting so many more thunderstorms than usual, a result, I think, of the Grand Solar Minimum that totally effects the weather all over the world.
We live in interesting times for sure.
Here is a word from our host Sam
CSI: Who Are You?"Welcome to Saturday 9. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme. "
Saturday 9: Who Are You? (1977)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song, originally recorded by The Who, was the theme of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which ran from 2000 to 2015. Did you watch it? Were you a fan?
I did not watch is, so I was not a fan.

2) When the show premiered, Gil Grissom (William Petersen) was the CSI team's supervisor. Gil's mother was deaf, and so he was fluent in American Sign Language. Can you communicate using ASL?
A little bit, but not much.

3) His assistant is blood-splatter analyst Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger). Catherine's family moved often, which made it hard for her to get traction in her studies. She finally just dropped out of high school. She later got her GED, and even graduated from college. Have you ever considered going back to school?
Yes. I would love too to do that, but it is way to expensive now.

4) Though set in Las Vegas, most of CSI was filmed in Santa Clarita, CA. Santa Clarita is also home to Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. Do you enjoy roller coasters?
No. I am not a fan of fast rides that are dangerous and unhealthy.
5) The vocalist on the CSI theme, Roger Daltry of the Who, made a cameo appearance on the show during season 7. Do you have a favorite Who song?
No. I was not a fan of the Who, so I am not interested in their music.

6) CSI became a franchise, followed by CSI: Miami and CSI: New York. If we could organize a Saturday 9 field trip, which of these CSI cities would you prefer we visit: Las Vegas, Miami or New York?
New  York is a mess right now. Miami is only good for beaches, Las Vegas is too commercial. I will skip them all and we will go to Sante Fe New Mexico instead. I am sure we will have a great time.

7) In 2000, the last original Peanuts comic strip was published. How many Peanuts characters can you name?
Just a few like Charlie Brown, Lucy, Pigpen, Linus, Snoopy. If Toni were here she'd name them all perfectly!
8) Also in 2000, media giant Time Warner merged with America Online, the email provider. It's estimated that 74% of us check our email at least once/day. Are you one of the 74%?
Nope. I go months, years without checking my email.
9) Random question -- Did you more recently cut and paste, or delete?
Cut and paste in Photoshop.
tune in tomorrow for Sunday Stealing.

Persuasion by Jane Austen

Literary Pearls..
 Chapter 24

W ho can be in doubt of what followed? When any two young people take it into their heads to
marry, they are pretty sure by perseverance to carry their point, be they ever so poor, or ever so imprudent, or ever so little likely to be necessary to each others ultimate comfort. This may be bad morality to conclude with, but I believe it to be truth; and if such parties succeed, how should a Captain Wentworth and an Anne Elliot, with the advantage of maturity of mind, consciousness of right, and one independent fortune between them, fail of bearing down every opposition? They might in fact, have borne down a great deal more than they met with, for there was little to distress them beyond the want of graciousness and warmth. Sir Walter made no objection, and Elizabeth did nothing worse than look cold and unconcerned. Captain Wentworth, with five-and-twenty thousand pounds, and as high in his profession as merit and activity could place him, was no longer nobody. He was now esteemed quite worthy to address the daughter of a foolish, spendthrift baronet, who had not had principle or sense enough to maintain himself in the situation in which Providence had placed him, and who could give his daughter at present but a small part of the share of ten thousand pounds which must be hers hereafter.
Captain Wentworth
Sir Walter, indeed, though he had no affection for Anne, and no vanity flattered, to make him really happy on the occasion, was very far from thinking it a bad match for her. On the contrary, when he saw more of Captain Wentworth, saw him repeatedly by daylight, and eyed him well, he was very much struck by his personal claims, and felt that his superiority of appearance might be not unfairly balanced against her superiority of rank; and all this, assisted by his well-sounding name, enabled Sir Walter at last to prepare his pen, with a very good grace, for the insertion of the marriage in the volume of honour.

2nd post for today: HodgePodge

Rain and thunder and darkness today.
It has been a very stormy summer here by the Jersey seaside. Everything is green and lush as a result. Though, compared to the brown landscape of the western US.

Here is this week's hodgepodge.
From this Side of the Pond1. August 12th is National Middle Child Day...are you a middle child? If not, where in your family do you fall in terms of birth order? Do you hold true to the typical characteristics of oldest-middle-youngest-only child?  Elaborate.

I am the first born of my parents, but not an only child. I am my father's youngest by decades and my mother's only child.
I don't believe in categories or locking people into classifications. It is very ugly.  Personality types, religious types, any other types.     Nope, Not having it.
Annie don't play that. Life is not that simple and people are never simple, never the same. Each person is as different as snowflakes. No two are the same ever.  This effort to lock people into categories is very new, very disturbing and very wrong.

2. Tell us about a time you felt like (or you actually were) in the middle of nowhere.
Uintas Mountains, Utah
Everywhere is somewhere. If you were no where you would not exist. See?  I've been in places where humans rarely go in the High Unitas of Utah though.

3. What's something you're smack in the middle of currently?
Fixing the house up as I am able. I can't fix my roof. I just have no money for it so I am rearranging inside to make myself feel better about a hopeless situation.
4. What's a food you love to eat that has something delicious in the middle?
I used to love Snickers but I no longer eat sugar of any kind really, so oh, I know, how about Manicotti! Now that's pretty delicious in the middle!

 5. Share a memory from your middle school days, or junior high if that's what your school dubbed kids somewhere between grades 6-8.
We studied aviation in 7th  grade. Our science teacher Mr. Seitz taught us about aviation. We each built our own design from balsa wood. A great year and a wonderful experience.
It was still called Junior High and was 7th and 8th grades.

 6. Insert your own random thought here.

With Politicians.  Everyone of them is a crook. Right/left.. all the same bunch of losers.

America Today

And religion is silent....
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

Weather or Not...

Hey Friends! Welcome to Tuesday 4.
Weather or Not...

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit”  Jeremiah 17:7-8

1. What kind of weather pleases you the most?
I think it depends on my mood. I like most kinds of weather from hot and sunny to cold and freezing to wet and stormy. I would not like any one of them on a regular basis which is why I like living where there are 4 seasons.
2. Do rainy days bother you or do you find them a time to relax and take it easy?  Any puddle jumping in your life?

No. I find them relaxing and it gives a chance to feel safe and cozy indoors. I used to love walking to school in the rain and coming home after a storm.
I also love walking while it is snowing at night. It's wonderful to see the yellow light from homes streaming out onto the fresh new snow. It is so quiet that you can hear the sound of the falling snow. Its good to get cold and then come home and warm up. In summer it is good to get hot and then cool down in water or with an ice cold drink!
3. Do you have meals you enjoy in certain kinds of weather or certain seasons? Please share with us?
I love to eat meals based on the seasons and the holidays.

I like soups and stews and chili in the fall and winter, along with fall meat dishes from my Good Housekeeping Cookbook from 1969.  It gives menus for all the seasons and days of the week. Best cookbook EVER!
Summer : Charcoal grilled chicken, roasted veggies, cold salad.
Fall:Weinerschnitzel or Sauerbraten or Rouladen, red cabbage, Spätzli .(Oktoberfest!!)
Winter: Chicken Parmigiano with  Zucchini and French Bread.
Spring: Swiss Veal Cutlet, peas and rice (you can use chicken)
4.As the prophet Jeremiah tells us,  It is a good idea to bloom where you are planted.
How do you handle stormy weather and does a day need to be sunny for you to enjoy it? Why not give us hints on enjoying any kind of weather.

Most things can be handled by your attitude. If you can change your attitude and your mind set you can handle much more than you think you can.
Of course, everyone gets tired of the same weather day after day. When living out west I grew tired of the constant sunny days and used to wish for some rain or clouds to add spice to life.
" Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it."— Proverbs 25:16
I think Proverbs is the most important book in the bible if you believe in God. After you believe you must know how to act.  Proverbs is the guide to life.

Thank you for joining in. I am trying to come up with interesting question. Do you like them so far?

Stolen from League of Extraordinary Penpals
1. What are your plans for August?
I really don't have any plans.
2. Review the first half of 2020

Food... Glorious Food.
Tuesday 4

Welcome to Tuesday 4 in honor of  Toni Taddeo.
Hi Toni!! Think of you almost every day.

Food!
1.  What do you have at breakfast? What can you recommend?
Breakfast for me is eaten late and usually a  boiled egg.
Sometimes it is oatmeal with heavy cream and cinnamon and occasionally I fry the egg.
2. What is your favorite meal of the day and why?
It used to be breakfast when I could eat pancakes or waffles but now it is supper and I love what I make for supper usually.
3.  Tell us about your typical lunch or dinner.
I rarely eat lunch at all. If I do it is a salad.
I make dinners from scratch all the time. I make meatloaf, roast beef, chicken, fish , casseroles, etc.
I always have a meat or fish and 2 vegetables  but it is extremely rare  for me to have a starch like potato or pasta.
4.  Were meals different growing up or do you continue much as your mother did?
I still cook much as my mother did, making meals even if I am eating alone.
All food was made from scratch and I do that also today.
We didn't order in as many people do and I don't think it is healthy to do so.
Growing up, pizza or chinese food were snack foods, not meals.  Hamburgers and hot dogs were only for picnics in our house.
Weekday meals were meatloaf, fried chicken, roasted chicken fish, roast beef or steak, German Rouladen, Pepper steak, spaghetti, soups, all made from scratch.
My mother and grandmother made pies often which we had as dessert.

The skies are looking dark and cloudy as we wait to see what Isaias will do here along the New Jersey coastline.
I am thinking of the other huge rotted tree behind my yard on government land. One fell within inches of my home a couple of weeks ago. If this one goes I hope it falls to the side! These are very tall big dead pines.
I hope you are enjoying the Tuesday 4 and tell your friends to join in if you would!

Monday Batten Down the Hatches

A   hurricane is coming so I am putting a tarp on the roof, putting the lawn chairs into the shed and packing away the tin Heron, turning the glass table upside down and wishing Mr. Plastic Alligator much luck as he hugs the ground. I might also drain the pond down about 12 inches to allow for flooding.
I can hear the pounding of the hammer on my roof as the tarps(heavy duty camo tarps) are laid down over the bad areas.
